The Legends team came back yesterday with a fanstream that contained a lot more content than I expected as SDCC approached. Read on to get some thoughts on these new additions!
The debut ends the 85th anniversary series in stunning fashion with a giant new Odin figure. Now for Marvel’s Thor, I tend to favor Kirby or Simonson’s designs, which don’t match the specific designs I remember, but the overall feel is there, with a more modern sense of detail. I think the flashier helmet is more reminiscent of Kirby, while the ram horns feel more like Simonson. Regardless, the commanding qualities are on full display here, even if his staff now looks a bit ridiculously small (ahem). I can imagine this Odin rushing onto the scene with a blinding light to correct all the mischief Thor and Loki have done. The item will be available from Pulse and other mainstream retailers next week, so it should be very easy to find.
I couldn’t care less about the new Venom character. The decoration and sculpting are beautiful, but I haven’t seen the movie yet and have less than zero interest because I’m not a Venom person. Arriving at Target on an unspecified date.
This Professor I think the gold color would also contrast better with Lilandra, so I think I’ll wait for this version of Charles since they strongly hinted at this possibility, as did the X-Men ’97 version.
Destiny has been at the top of my list for a while, especially since we’ve got a great Free Force/Brother of Evil Mutants team here, so it’s a must buy for me. While the Rogue I most wanted was an 80s punk with a belt and mohawk mullet, or a Silvestri pre-Outback style, that left me with the Villain Rogue and the Secret Wars Rogue, So that’s very exciting for me.
This has to be the most stunningly beautiful figure, but personally very disappointing. My impeccable character sculpt, articulation, paint, amazing 3D flame stand, it’s all awesome. I would 100% buy this. But having another Gene Phoenix before Rachel is so annoying. I’m eager to complete my Excalibur team! Ahhh! Such beautiful frustration.
The Strange Stories Wave logo is super exciting for me because I love weird Marvel mystery stuff. That said, I don’t know much about these specific versions of the Ghost characters.
The Voodoo Brothers look like a solid update, and I do like the fact that you can swap out the Eye of Agamotto, but I’m pretty happy with the two Voodoo Brothers figures I already own. It would be more appealing to my classic comic leanings if they made him a classic version. In fact, I’m debating whether to buy this or try to find the BAF parts myself.
I’m a fan of the Gene Colan version of Tomb of Dracula, so while this isn’t my favorite Dracula, I really like the look of the character. I will say that I read a book where he fought Captain Britain like this which earns him points in my book, but this design always felt like a reference to Coppola’s Ram Stoker’s Dracula movie armor, which also earned him points from me. I really like that they gave him a fanged face and a more androgynous look. In my books, vampire characters need to show their fangs. This is a definite pre-order day number for me.
Talk about hot claws! I’m not familiar with Hellverine, but I thought I might open the Marvel app and find out more, since this looks interesting.
I’m vaguely aware of Bloodstorm’s existence, but it’s a what-if character based on a classic X-Men story, so I’m already somewhat invested, even though I haven’t read any of her books. Although the legs are very thin, the figure looks smooth. Hopefully the plastic there isn’t too soft. That said, the portraits look fantastic, and the team does the honors for this couple with varying degrees of canineness.
I know Helstrom is the son of Satan, but this look is a little dull for me. I think I prefer the delicate cape of the original design.
I don’t know much about Lilith either, but the design was interesting enough for me to do some research.
I don’t think I need another Moon Knight, but I do have fond memories of the gold-accented costume, so I do kind of want this one.
We’ve been living in a world of legendary BAF for decades, and this BAF still stings a bit after all these years. I need a Blackheart, but I think Dracula is probably the only figure I 100% have to buy for the rest of the waves. Bloodstorm and Inferno were fun weird variations that I could choose from, and I did like Golden Moon Knight, but the rest didn’t really appeal to me. I don’t know, I might need to buy BAF from eBay and Dracula. I think it might be cheaper to buy Wave directly. Overall, there was a lot of cool stuff on display today, but the Black Heart Wave had me weighing my options.
