As we first reported on K-ComicsBeat, IDW and Webtoon.com, we are collaborating on releasing some of the hit singles in the IDW Vertical Scroll (WebToon) format. We’ve been hearing some chat about the matter in the post channel: We’ve seen a variety of partnerships between American comic publishers and various VSC platforms – including Wayne Family Adventure, formatted original content – but tweaking existing materials is another way for already popular materials to attract new audiences.
Several new comics will join this 8pm/5pm today, adding to the already announced Webtoon adaptation Godzilla: Unnatural disaster, The beloved person Under a tree that no one sees, Memoirs of Eisner’s award-winning with George Takei They call us enemies.
Also debuted this afternoon: a freshly reformatted web comic version series Sonic Hedgehog And Esner’s favorites Locke & Key. It is worth noting that the lineup includes two licensed titles, which suggests more collaboration can be done.
When the partnership was initially announced, executives at both companies were enthusiastic.
“Webtoon has become a destination for various comics, including some of the largest franchises in entertainment.” Yongsoo Kim, Head of Webtoon Global Webtoon Entertainment. “This partnership with IDW Publishing is an exciting step to expand our diverse libraries and connect more fans with stories they love in a whole new way.”
“Working with Webtoon to bring our beloved IDW books to their platform is an exciting step to expand our reach and engage with a wider audience.” Davidi Jonas, CEO and publisher of IDW Publishing. “We are excited to work with such an innovative platform and we can’t wait to see how our story resonates with Webtoon’s global community. This collaboration is an important part of our ability to bring comics to our fans in a creative and accessible way.”

Under the tree
No. murder. Locals. It’s the cardinal rule of the town serial killer, formal citizen and cute brown bear Samantha Strong. After all, in a big city outside the forest, there is a perfect potential victim, when you work hard like Sam to build a comfortable life and thriving business in a community surrounded by friendly animal folk, warm cedar trees and the aroma of freshly roasted apple pie…the last thing you want is that you want to disturb the peace. So when one of Woodbrook’s own encounters a tragic, mysterious demise, you can imagine her indignation- you won’t blame her for self-destruction in town and Sheriff Patterson to hunt down her rival before she starts (actually) barking the wrong tree. In this original graphic novel debut by writer and artist Patrick Horvath, cute little animals are not immune to crime.
Locke & Key
Locke & Key tells a story about magic and family, legacy and sorrow, good and evil. The famous suspense novelist and New York Times bestselling author Joe Hill (Fireman, Heart-shaped Box) creates a fascinating story of dark fantasy and miracles—like the amazing artwork of Gabriel Rodriguez, like the doors of Keyhouse, will change everyone who opens it.
They call us enemies
George Takei has attracted the hearts of the world with his fascinating stage presence and his outspoken commitment to equal rights. But long before he braved his brave new border in Star Trek, he woke up as a country of birth in a four-year-old boy’s war with his father, whose entire family was forced to fall from his home into an uncertain future. In a stunning graphic memoir, Takei revisits his haunted childhood in the U.S. concentration camp, one of more than 100,000 Japanese-Americans imprisoned by the U.S. government during World War II. In this story of courage, country, loyalty and love, experience shaped American idols and America itself.
