As readers, we bring our experiences and worldviews to what we read. For me, I love comics and science fiction. I live in an era when these two genres intersect and produce magnificent works of art. For the longest time, I avoid reading a lot Octavia ButlerThe work – considered one of the godmothers of black speculative novels – because I felt I wasn’t ready yet.
In 2020, for some strange reason, I feel like I’m ready to read 1994 New York Times Famous Book of the Year The fable of the sowinger During Covid-19. If you are not familiar fable Doology, this is a world destroyed by systematic injustice and ecological disasters. It is a dystopian world that is combined with political, social and economic oppression in today’s censorship.
Set to sowing In the 2020s, jump to 2035 in Butler’s follow-up sowing, Science fiction The fable of talent. Talent Now it is the third graphic novel Hugo Awards –Win a creative team Damian Duffy and John Jennings To accommodate publishers, Abrams comics, Including the first half of the year of ground disease, The fable of the sowinger.
like Sowing, talent It is mainly told through the diary of Lauren Oya Olamina, a young woman with a super sympathetic talent, also known as sharing. In this dystopian environment, this gift may also be a curse. When her gated community is subverted, Olamina’s life is overturned, her friends and family are murdered, and she is forced to flee. Along her journey, she found a new family among others, hoping to survive this cruel world of slavery and rape. In this newly discovered family and trip, her diary becomes the basis for a new concept of lifestyle.
Tenants of Earth Seeds include change as part of life, but in creating part of the Earth, Olamina’s ultimate goal is to create a movement that brings humanity into the stars.
Earth: Book of LifeSection 54: Choose Your Leader
Choose your leader
Be wise and forward-looking.Leaded by cowards
Being controlled
The fear of cowards.Leaded by fools
Being led
By opportunists
Who controls the fool?Leaded by a thief
It’s to be proposed
Your most precious treasure
Stolen.Leaded by a liar
Yes, ask
Being told of a lie.Leaded by a tyrant
I want to sell myself
And the person you love
Enter slavery.
To complement Olamina’s narrative, we get her stolen daughter Larkin Olamina aka Asha Vere, who adds her story to her point of view after forcing her separation. AlexandersMake America great again.Larkin’s life with Alexanders can be considered privileged, but it is even more reminiscent of the educational schools that Native people suffered in the hands of the United States.
Although Olamina’s search for Larkin and the creation of the earth are the cornerstones of this book, for me, Larkin is looking for her journey in her life as a high-end Dreamask content creator and connecting with my uncle, a real work. She learned about her mother’s later years in her life, but even when she found her, she had a resentment because her mother called for the creation of earth.
This narrative of dystopian social horror has nothing to do with programmatic lovers and repressed horrors, without the taste of pain, you just wonder what their lives would be like if they could stay together.
If you somehow don’t touch Jennings’ artwork, it’s an intrinsic and crazy style that calls woodcut prints, but for the digital age. and David Brame Thanks to the layout, I’m not sure how much design work he and Jennings shared, as the appearance of the control collar used to enslave will remind you Xenomorphs alien Franchise. This is almost appropriate, as the collar turns the captured people into their own shadows, a primitive and fanatical style full of unnecessary tragedies.
Reviewing separate color trays gives each narrative a visual sound. Larkin/Asha’s look is more just right for her futuristic POV, while Olamina’s world has a softer earthy or intense dark color palette to convey the situation. When her world changes, such as the destruction of acorns, looking for Larkin or the expansion of the earth, it is used for Olamina’s tray transfer.
If you are not interested in another story of doom and melancholy, warn us about our destiny, Talent Not only that, it’s an epic sci-fi story, a survival guide and spiritual roadmap. Butler and President Jarret non-American or LGBTQIA+, Under the guise of Christianity in the late 1990s, his relatives and Reagan’s choice of infamous slogans during the age of Felony 47.
In the late 1990s, sowing and Talent Originally, they were crystal balls of the future, but today, they are an unsettling reflection of our time. Although Duffy and Jennings did a great job of explaining the horrors of this well-known world, they provided a better service to the work of conveying Butler’s vision of hope and redemption for humanity.
