Blockchain-based space game star Atlas will launch a fleet rental system that allows players to rent ships starting March 5 instead of buying them directly.
This update is intended to reduce financial barriers to new players by providing alternatives to marine ownership, which previously required the purchase of NFT-based spacecraft. With this change, players can now rent boats for mining, trading and other activities in the game.
Those without ships now have access to core game elements without making substantial upfront investments, while shipowners have the option to generate in-game earnings by renting unused assets.

What is Star Atlas?
Star Atlas is a blockchain-based multiplayer game based on a futuristic space environment that combines elements of space exploration, economic management and strategy, with a focus on a player-driven economy. Ships, devices and other in-game assets exist as NFTs, meaning they can be purchased, sold or traded on the blockchain market.
Star Atlas players play various roles, such as explorers, merchants or miners, who participate in an open economy where resources are extracted, transported and exchanged.
Previously, accessing gameplay required buying a spaceship at least once at a high cost. A rental system is about to be launched to change this requirement by providing low-cost alternatives to direct ownership.

How does fleet rental work?
The new fleet rental system allows players to rent boats during set periods. Transactions are processed through a blockchain-based smart contract that automatically executes the lease terms and is returned to the owner at the end of the agreement.
Renters can choose from a variety of boats suitable for different game activities:
- mining: Resources such as hydrogen and minerals can be extracted, which can be sold for profit.
- Transactions and Shipping: Move goods between locations and profit from market volatility.
- Logistics and production: Transport crew and materials for manufacturing and other economic activities.
Shipowners who do not actively use their assets can list them at selected prices. The system ensures that the ships remain under the owner’s control to prevent renters from reselling or permanently changing them.
The rental system is expected to change the way players interact with Star Atlas, making it easier to access while providing new asset utilization opportunities. Future game updates, including combat mechanics, may further shape the role of teams in the gaming economy.
