I’ll finish this quickly because I’ve discussed this at length before. However, the “Skeleton Crew” series finale failed to enter the Luminate streaming rankings that have been released for the past seven days, so the final episode has been included. The 10th-ranked entry on the Luminate chart has 377.8 million minutes.
Meanwhile, Episode 4 also failed to impress on the Nielsen rankings, where the show still doesn’t appear, with the 10th-ranked original series here clocking in at 326 million minutes.
That means Skeleton Crew is easily the least-watched Star Wars live-action show on Disney+. The audience may be even smaller than Ms. Marvel.
Anyone still holding out hope that it would somehow get a second season order will be sorely disappointed. There is no point in discussing the reasons for this failure. It’s probably a combination of factors: a child as a protagonist may not be what most adult Star Wars fans want, Star Wars Goonies Meets Treasure Island may be too far removed from the Star Wars fans know and love, and maybe The acolytes had left nothing but scorched earth.
The only ones to blame here are the people who make all the decisions at Lucasfilm and Disney. However, one thing that absolutely cannot be blamed is showrunners Christopher Ford and Jon Watts and all the stars of Skeleton Crew, who did just that. The only question Watts and Ford may have to answer is whether their pitch is actually appropriate for Star Wars, however that’s Kathleen Kennedy’s job to decide, not theirs, and they’re doing a damn good job. So if you like the concept of Star Wars: Galactic Pirates, this show is a fun ride with some of the best writing on any Disney+ Star Wars show outside of Andor and the early Mandalorian seasons.
Why there are still no reports of Kathleen Kennedy leaving Lucasfilm after her third consecutive huge flop (Indy 5, The Following, and now Skeleton Crew) while merchandise and video game sales The massive decline is still mind-boggling. The next victim of her death touch could also be The Mandalorian and Grogu movie, and the leaks for that movie sound scary. But by then it may be too late to replace her. It’s hard to imagine how Star Wars could make a comeback anytime soon when there’s nothing but craters, smoking ruins, and scorched earth.
Let’s hope for the best.
