It was announced yesterday that the SDCC and the City of San Diego have signed an agreement to keep the scam in its birthplace until 2027. The show was supposed to last until ’26, so that’s a year-long extension, but it’s still good news. Everyone is celebrating.
SD professional Todd Gloria Announcement: “Comic-Con is a part of San Diego’s identity as a city, and I’m very excited to announce that it will be running through 2027. This event is not only a celebration of creativity and fandom, but is also a major economic driver for our We are proud to continue this incredible partnership and look forward to welcoming fans from around the world.
Rip Ripto (Yes) The president and CEO of the San Diego Convention Center joined the celebration. “Comic-Con is the most prestigious convention in the world and the largest event we host here at the San Diego Convention Center. We never take it for granted. We are grateful to the Comic-Con team and all of our partners who make it happen year after year Contributed to the success of Comic-Con.
SDCC’s David Glanzer There was also joy in my heart, mixed with a hint of warning. “We are excited to remain in San Diego for years to come, thanks in large part to the many hotels offering competitive rates and meeting space. Serving the tens of thousands who travel to San Diego each summer for Comic-Con Maintaining affordable hotel rates for our visitors is vital and, despite the last minute, we are grateful that more hotels have come on board to make this agreement pending.
Hotel rooms (of course) have become a major issue in negotiations to host the show in San Diego. Last year, Glanzer warned that maintaining the price of hotel rooms through large hotel buildings dedicated to the show was crucial to the future of the SDCC. As we reported not long ago, hotels outside the neighborhood are very expensive, so his warning is well-founded. Glanzer’s comments suggest the hotel agreed to provide enough rooms, so it’s definitely a happy ending for now.
Of course, as a decades-long scam observer, it’s always nice to see all these glowing comments from city officials about the SDCC. We can relax for a while…at least until 2028.
