To say that this 4K remaster of one of my favorite movies gives me mixed feelings would be an understatement. When I heard about this one-of-a-kind collaboration, I was initially excited daft punk and their childhood heroes, Matsumoto Reijito be re-released internationally, but immediately affected by the visuals accompanying the press release… Is this possible? SD-The only digitally painted film (hey, it was 2003, for the poor) Toei Take a break) About to fall victim to the most modern and insidious disease: high-end artificial intelligence?
regardless Interstellar 5555 Whether there was ever an original HD master has been debated, as the much-maligned 2011 Blu-ray release was little more than an upgrade from the 2003 DVD, suffering from severe artifacts and horrific color banding. I first saw this film in an independent cinema in the mid-2000s, and I remember thinking they were showing DVD-quality images. The general consensus on Blu-ray forums seems to be: Toei The HD master tapes were lost or they never existed, and the basis for every release to date was (now lost) SD The NTSC source is converted to PAL DVD and the 30 fps signal is upscaled to 25 fps via frame skipping. A six-frame clip explains the juddery action in some Blu-ray scenes, and why it’s by far the best way to watch it Interstellar 5555 This comes as 2003 PAL region-free DVDs released by EMI become increasingly scarce.
Before we review this latest version, let me explain why I like it Interstellar 5555 So much for it first. First, the album Discover is a stunning, eclectic collection of songs that synthesize rock, pop, funk and electronic music into a vibrant, dynamic whole. although daft punk‘s debut album Homework and subsequent versions After all, we are human and random access memory Nearly every song has a standout track Discover The song is a classic. Everyone knows the incomparable opening quartet of tracks “One More Time,” “Aerodynamic,” “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” and “Digital Love,” but it’s the later songs “Crescendolls,” “Superheroes” and “Face to Face “It’s on top of me daft punk All time trajectories.
daft punk member Thomas Bangault and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo Growing up in France, watch the localized version Matsumoto Reijianime, mainly captain harlock. They believe it affects their work. Although Matsumoto himself is not Interstellar 5555As a character designer, the entire film sticks very closely to his aesthetic – from the tall, slender, ethereal heroine Stella to the round-nosed drummer Barrel. The flying V guitar-shaped spaceship of the heroic protagonist Shep is also very Matsumoto style. I watched it too captain harlock I watched it on British cable TV as a kid, so I have a certain nostalgia for the “Matsumoto look”.
toei animation really bringing out the best in them Interstellar 5555Visual Effects – Full of fantasy, the whimsical alien world is reminiscent of classic science fiction novels from the 1950s and 1960s. Each of the main characters boasts excellent animation performances, especially during the many musical performances. Stella moved deftly around the stage, strumming her guitar around the stationary band members. Several softly shaded dream sequences evoke a shimmering world of iridescent imagination, perfectly accompanied by an endlessly creative score.
This is surprising for a film with no dialogue Interstellar 5555 Tells its (admittedly simple) story well. While each song’s accompanying video can stand on its own (the four clips are released with associated videos) Discover single before the film’s release), they channel each other seamlessly. The only concession to traditional cinematic narrative is the addition of some sparse sound effects where appropriate. We become familiar with each character and their relationships purely through the medium of music and action. It was all so clever and funny that it still makes my head spin.
Spaceship pilot Shep is another quintessential Matsumoto creation—a selfless hero, a square-jawed man who is deeply in love with Stella (he has never met her; he is a fan, who lives in his bedroom) Posters of Stella plastered all over it). Shep’s attempted rescue and sacrifice in the middle of the film gives the film a strange structure, but it’s not unusual for Matsumoto to die before the closing credits. Although we don’t know much about him, the double-track “Something About Us” and “Voyager” pack an emotional punch.
Through not-so-subtle imagery, daft punk use Interstellar 5555 Bringing attention to the way the music industry, first produces, then abuses its talent, bleeding them dry for profit, and expelling them when their stars fade (effectively sacrificing them to the lava at one point pit). Our blue-skinned quartet were brainwashed, then had their skin painted in various human tones, forced to wear mind-control sunglasses, and forced to play music and sign autographs until they were exhausted. This is a fairly straightforward allegory. according to Interstellar 5555due to famous musical artists such as Wolfgang Amadeus MozartJanis Joplin, Ella Fitzgerald, and Jimmy Page were successful because they were aliens captured and brainwashed by the main villain, Lord Darkwood. This is so funny.
“Veridis Quo” is a strange gothic song in which our heroes face an evil mastermind and his army of creepy robot cults in a secret lava-filled lair, with a strange altar at its center, Driven by gold awards from the music industry. It’s best not to question the plot at this point. Everything explodes in “Short Circuit” in a very satisfying way, and the story is properly resolved in the excellent “Face to Face,” which has some very interesting visuals and hope for the future. The ten minute ending theme is indeed “too long”… but I think we can allow it daft punk At the end of such a unique and entertaining film, there’s room for some indulgence. If you have any appreciation daft punk or works Matsumoto Reiji You haven’t seen it yet Interstellar 5555then I highly recommend you check it out any way you can…
Except maybe not through this damn 4K.
Look, I get it. The material available is of poor quality by modern standards, and if no HD masters appear and higher-ups demand money from re-releases, then something Must be done. Sorry, Toei A decision to commit a crime against art, music and human dignity. It breaks my heart to report to you, dear reader, Interstellar 5555The 4K “restoration” is one of the most egregious examples of artistic violence I’ve seen in a long time.
Do you remember the story about the Elias Garcia Martinez mural from a few years ago? look at that man “Restored” in the Spanish town of Borja by an amateur who clearly had no idea what she was doing? That’s exactly what this “remastered version” is about. This version was run through what looked like an artificial intelligence program that had no idea what it was doing and predictably caused absolute chaos. I have almost no words to describe this crime against all that is holy, so let some pictures do the talking. Below are pairs of screenshots, with the left side of each screenshot being an image captured from the 2003 DVD and the right side being an image captured from the remaster. Judge for yourself.
I would almost like to end by saying, “My Lords, the prosecution rests”, but we have to consider why things got so bad. When used, generative AI upgrades are undoubtedly a last-ditch effort to squeeze blood from stone without any investment of manpower or money. It’s cheap, dirty and lazy attack Try ways to generate additional information where there is no information initially. This is what you get when you try to upscale deinterlaced 4:3 480i/480p resolution (640×480 = 307,200 pixels) to 4:3 4K (2880×2160 = 6,220,800 pixels) — The End 20 times The amount of source information. At that point, you need to start making up some shit, which is exactly what it looks like: a stupid algorithm producing the illusion of mindless, meaningless garbage without any apparent human oversight. It doesn’t understand what it sees, but human In doing so, what people are paying to see amounts to cinematic sludge spewed out by the algorithm. I cannot for a moment imagine Matsumoto approving of such an act of illegitimacy.
this version Interstellar 5555 It no longer looks like it was made by a human creator. Every line is either oversharpened, thickened, or erased, while facial features blur into each other like something out of George Romero’s worst nightmare. Instead of improving details, this idiotic algorithm removes and smooths them out, scraping sandpaper over delicate textures and then smearing an inch of Vaseline over them for good measure. Raw organic human warmth shines through soft textures, soft lighting and subtle gradients of color, only to be crushed by destructive algorithmic savages who have no idea of the meaning of art or human endeavour.
At least the music isn’t interfered with by mindless machines of mass destruction. If you could turn off the part of your brain that internally screams when faced with a deformed monster, it would still be an equally great movie. I can’t help but think it would be better if they connected a movie projector to a DVD player like they did 20 years ago. I wholeheartedly recommend sticking with the older version Interstellar 5555 Because if this abomination is sold somehow, they will continue to do so and we have no one to blame but ourselves. In fact, this is a lie. Interstellar 5555 Tell us that evil business tycoons are to blame for the immoral ills of the entertainment industry. How prophetic.
