I’m excited about this. Batman: Dark Patterns is a stand-alone, mystery-focused series set in the early years of the Dark Knight’s career. While this may sound like the type of story you’ve read before and don’t need to read again, this latest version was written by Dan Waters And by Hayden Shermanboth of whom are quickly climbing the ranks on my personal list of favorite creators. If you recognize these names, you probably won’t be surprised Dark Pattern #1 is beautiful, haunting, and strange.
Generally, there’s one thing I want to take away from these Batman stories “set in the past.” I want them to be creative. If a story just rehashed the same basics we’ve seen in other Batman stories – “play the hits” – then I wouldn’t have time to listen to it. But if the art team finds a unique way to depict Batman and Gotham City, or if the writers find a character or concept to showcase that I’ve never seen before, then I’m on board.
dark pattern’ The debut excels in both areas. sherman and colorist by Farrell The carefully designed pages are slightly askew and the content is pulpy, giving readers a dizzying sense of inhabiting their version of Gotham City. Waters twists a solid mystery setup into something more terrifying when Batman comes face to face with an enemy whose terrifying gimmicks are deliberately designed in a way that I can’t believe I’ve never seen before Way to confuse the Caped Crusader. (I read an article a lot of Batman comics.
If you’re a Batman reader who prefers the low-tech Dark Knight to deal with gritty mysteries and potentially deadly strangeness, you’ll find a lot to like Batman: Dark Patterns. This first issue not only met my high expectations but also left me very excited for the second chapter.
