While Nielsen remains the gold standard for streaming rankings, several new players have their own rankings based on its long history of providing industry-standard ratings for classic network television. There’s Samba TV, which only collects data on users who use its app, and there’s Luminate, a more serious player that, like Nielsen, tries to do this by analyzing a variety of sources (not just any one app). to measure overall viewership.
While Nielsen always has a four-week lag so the first results from Skeleton Crew should be released in late December, Luminate releases their charts in a more timely fashion, usually later on Friday/week Data for the previous seven days were released earlier on Saturday. This means Luminate already has the data from Skeleton Crew’s debut earlier this week.
It doesn’t look good for a new Star Wars show. Click to see more.
As the headlines have already told you, Skeleton Crew does not appear on Luminate’s top 10 streaming list of original shows. The tenth-ranked program is “The Day of the Jackal” with 332.3 million minutes.
This means we can only guess at what Skeleton Crew will do, we just know it’s definitely less than 332.3 million minutes long.
In comparison, The Acolyte made it to the Luminate charts in its first week, but only logged a measly 210 million minutes. In Week 2, that number rose to 380.5 million minutes.
So there’s a good chance that a lot of people will only catch up on the show this weekend, and next week the numbers will be significantly higher.
Of course, it’s possible that Skeleton Crew will have its own Solo: A Star Wars Story moment. Due to the backlash against The Last Jedi, the movie (among other reasons) crashed and burned. “The Acolyte” undoubtedly angered many fans and may have even turned them away from watching “Star Wars.”
On the bright side, the response from fans and YouTube fans who talk about all things Star Wars has been almost universally positive, with almost everyone saying it was just “a lot of fun,” which is a sign of hope for Skull Squad. Therefore, positive word-of-mouth may convince more people to tune in.
But if not… Lucasfilm made its own bed, and if Skull Crew fails, they’ll only have themselves to blame, despite mostly positive reactions from people who actually watched it.
On the other hand, if Skull Crew pulls in more viewers in the coming weeks, Lucasfilm could still have a somewhat happy ending to what has been a poor 2024. We’ll find out more next Saturday! As usual, I’ll keep you updated.
