Coop and Steve thought about the prospect of streaming and how ridiculous it was that they wanted to get decent screenshots.

After stuffing our faces with leftovers over the weekend, I imagine most of us were scrolling through twenty streaming services while trying not to fall asleep on the couch. Weirdly, this reminded me of an anime theme that’s been stuck in my mind. Steve, my fellow columnist, do you subscribe to any given streaming service because you want to peruse its catalog, or do you do it primarily for work?
Steve
Well Coop, like any millennial with a hobby, I started doing something I really enjoyed and then found a way to turn it into a side hustle because late capitalism and the gig economy have made it so for us all Lost the feeling of stable employment. But to answer your question more directly, a little bit from column A and a little bit from column B.
Isn’t this the cold hard truth…
I’d say I’m in the same boat, Steve. Unless it’s a service I’m sharing with friends or family, it really depends on what’s in season as to whether or not I’m going to re-obtain a specific service myself. A good example is Crispy rollI had a sub almost throughout the entire run Three gun attack and Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury 2023. Oh, I also used the free trial version of Max to watch swirl also. Those savings probably bought me a sandwich.
Oh yes, I am very concerned about family password sharing. I pay gourdmy parents paid Netflixmy brother got Max, and so on. Otherwise I don’t know how to keep up with this increasingly fragmented (and expensive!) ecosystem. Come to think of it, though, the only streaming service I can browse on its own is anime. The fact that I use them for work has also become a point.
I posed a similar “happiness vs. work” question to my followers on Bluesky a few weeks ago, and they seemed to approach the services in a similar way. However, given the small sample size, I recommend taking my anecdotal findings with a grain of salt.
But back to the topic of perusing, half the time I forget everything on a given service. It’s like I’m struck by the lack of permanence of anime objects. If I had the series on Blu-ray or DVD, I would be more likely to finish it. I need something to taunt me on my shelf for months until I finally check it out…like escafone Until last weekend.
It doesn’t help that all these streaming libraries are ephemeral and ever-changing. I now rely on Letterboxd to tell me which services a certain movie is playing at a specific time. With anime, however, it’s more likely that the show’s license will expire and disappear without much fanfare. For example, with Enokido YojiHis name is in the news again tonight (I’m trying not to devolve into screaming with this column GQuuuuuuX), I thought it would be cool to revisit the much-maligned work captain earth Ten years later. But it’s gone now. Reduced to atoms. Unless you own the Blu-ray.
Your mention of Enokido reminds me of star driver It’s been absent from streaming for years…not to mention hard to find on Blu-ray. What a surprise to see it sitting there Crispy roll Now. But as you said, there’s a question of how long these series will last in the long term.
Speaking of surprises, I almost fell off my chair Tomorrow’s Joe Start streaming. Unless it’s a specialized service like this retro obsessionplaying the foundational classic elsewhere is increasingly rare. Or if the canon is elsewhere, it’s usually buried beneath the eighty-three isekai series produced in any given year.
Sadly, this isn’t a problem unique to anime services either. Every now and then I see a tweet/skeet counting the number of movies available Netflix These were all made before 1980 and were only a dozen loaves at most. Very sad.
I mean, personally, I think should The biggest advantage of streaming is having a large and readily available library of classics. I’d rather digest this than wolf down the service-exclusive crap that most streaming giants prioritize. even Crispy roll Trying to get on that “original” train, I think the only reason it failed is because animation production costs have become horribly cheap.
I remembered NetflixSo does the original animation effort…and it’s a mixed bag out there Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, great pretenderand a small selection of titles. I do like that the service suddenly stops dumping series, though. For one, I think it gives the creatives more time to make any small changes before airing if needed. Airing twice a week, the audience really rallies around their show.
Delicious food in the dungeon and (to a lesser extent) He Dahe If they suffered the same fate, they would be in trouble Shihai and Tiger and Rabbit 2. Not to mention the technical shortcomings that both series suffered towards the end of their first installments. man, Tiger and Rabbit 2 It really stung me to just hide under the rug…
We have no shortage of streaming silliness to report on, but since this column is more about our personal relationships with these services, I’m going to take this opportunity to complain about a few little things that I find extremely annoying.
First, as regular readers may have noticed, we tend to use a lot of screenshots in this column. Heck, this column wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for the ubiquity of anime streaming and the ability to screenshot. But these streaming services seem to be trying to silence us every time. Now, almost all platforms have adopted DRM on a wide range of platforms, thus disabling the screenshot functionality. To avoid this, I installed a separate browser and disabled hardware acceleration Only This allows me to use screenshots in this column. This is crazy.
Yeah…besides that, the difficulty with the screen limitations is probably why I spent the money on a Blu-ray drive…
You shouldn’t do it just to get a photo that makes you say, “Oh, that’s so fun.”
This is free advertising and every big company hates it. I do not understand. Then when I do use my workaround to get nice screenshots, I have to put in extra effort for them. Did you see this? Do you see the UI at the bottom? Do you know how many hours of my life I’ve wasted waiting for a few seconds for it to go away so I could get a clear frame? I don’t know either, but it’s a very non-zero number.
Not to mention you’ll need to keep your speedrunner claws constantly in order to get a good shot…
I did configure a game controller so I could take screenshots more ergonomically. Thankfully, most services these days clear the UI from the paused screen after a few seconds, so you don’t have to real It takes a trigger finger (just patience), but it’s been worse in the past. I remember there were a few variations FanimasonIt’s the player I can’t stop to get a good shot. The user interface will never go away. They hate me.
Netflix It’s fun, though, because it does the opposite and adds an override after you pause for a moment so you can’t dawdle anymore.
But on the bright side, I guess He DaheAppears in CR and Netflix Allows you to choose your screenshot poison. Come to think of it, I can’t remember how many shows aired on two different services at the same time (maybe gourd and Disney+ Even though they are almost the same now? I like having this as a choice for the audience. Especially since they can watch a show without signing up for another service. I hope we see this release strategy again.
This is neat, but I doubt it will become the norm. There isn’t much incentive for streamers to be nice to each other. Everyone wants to be the biggest fish. But this kind of competition is also a good thing. For example, I’m happy lurking Still hanging in there, avoiding the total Crispy roll monopoly. Also, back on my soapbox, they have the best screenshot UI in anime. Clicking Pause will flash a button in the middle of the screen, which will disappear immediately, and no UI elements will pop up unless you move the mouse. Every online video player should work like this. capital work, lurking. The only thing you’re missing is a keyboard shortcut for turning subtitles off/on.
You’d also have to give them props for adjusting the subtitle color…then again, I think the last time I watched anything on it lurking when coming back Akihabara Maid War and new Lucky boy To air in fall 2022.
Oh, how I miss the girls at Oinky Doink Cafe.
Look, someone has to live stream Gushing about magical girls. This year, and only lurking Bravely accepted this task. I salute them.
Still, I can’t help but suspect that we’re past the streaming ecosystem’s best years. Enshittiification has more or less moved on as prices continue to rise without commensurate improvements in the service or its library. I mean, Crispy roll is tearing one piece These are out of the control of the masses as we speak. The honeymoon is over.
Well, as streaming continues to move downstream, we might as well enjoy what’s out there while it lasts…and hopefully a Blu-ray or two.
