The Justice League is back. after the incident absolute power Following the event, the DC Universe’s premier team of superheroes has been reunited and the roster has been expanded to now include every hero in the world. new justice league unlimited series from absolute power team Mark Wade and Dan Morathis week’s first installment in the series is a truly enjoyable opener.
Mark Waid is no stranger to Justice League , having written memorable work on the ongoing Justice League in addition to other high-profile DC properties JLA series back in January 2000. One of Wade’s greatest strengths as a writer is his character interactions, and that’s on full display in this issue, with the Black Lightning and Star Sapphire duo taking center stage in their mission to take on a mysterious new enemy. It’s an unexpected focus, especially with big-name heroes like Superman and Wonder Woman also appearing on the scene, but the closer focus, especially on Star Sapphire’s fight to save lives, gives the issue an emotional core. a powerful way.
The Black Lightning/Star Sapphire pairing, as well as new member Air Wave joining the alliance, solve this problem nicely without being one giant background. Air Wave’s tour of the new JL Watchtower is provided by The Flash, a super-fast infodump of all the pertinent information a new member of the League’s current status quo might need. Wade’s storytelling is economical, with two pages of exposition never feeling overly explanatory, and even when they do, they wrap up quickly and return the reader to the main plot of the issue.
Dan Mora and the colorists brought the action to the page in stunning fashion Tamra Bonvillain. About to leave absolute power You might think that Mora would want to paint something a little smaller in size, but between his superman – Yes, he is painting two Monthly Now – It’s unclear if he’s heard of “Take It Easy” and his reunion Jilin University and his Batman/Superman: World’s Best The colorists should prove themselves to be one of the best superhero art teams in comics. Each section of the book is filled with detail that reflects the vast scope of the issue, and Mora and Bonvillain do an expert job of keeping the storytelling clear and accessible. Members of the League like Superman and Wonder Woman leap off the page like pop culture icons, while the quieter moments of characters like Star Sapphire and Airwave are captured with the weight and emotion they deserve. engraver Ariana Maher Tying everything together nicely, the text and sound effects capture and enhance the energy and excitement of the rest of the visuals. This is a masterclass in comic art created by a team of creators at the peak of their creative powers.
justice league unlimited #1 also immediately started sewing compelling seeds for future stories. From the mysterious organization already at odds with the League, to the mysterious events Batman and Blue Beetle are investigating on the other side of the world, to a twist on the final page that I don’t think anyone will see, Wade, Mora, and more. Make sure readers have a good reason to want to come back and read more. This is the perfect first issue in a series this reviewer has read in a long time, and it will be exciting to see where this brilliant creative team goes.
Final verdict: purchase.
round up
- It’s been a week of releases for DC, and the other biggest release of the week is Tom King, Ryan Sook, Dave Stewartand Clayton Cowlesof Black Canary: The best of the best #1. In this miniseries, Dinah competes in a televised title match against Lady Shiva in Las Vegas. The issue wastes no time getting into combat, while also jumping back in time to show some of the events leading up to the match. King uses the game commentators as narrators during the games, which does a great job of setting the tone for these scenes. Suk’s artwork is as solid as ever, with visceral fight scenes and solid characterization in the quieter moments.
- Jeff Parker, Lucas Kertner, Marcelo Maioloand Pat Brousseauof Batman/Santa Claus: Return of the Silent Knight #1 kicks off the latest team-up between the Dark Knight and the Jolly Old Elf. Last year’s original team-up series was a lot of fun, and this year’s looks to be no different, picking up loose threads from the original miniseries and expanding the team-up into a collaboration between Santa and the other heroes of the DCU. As per tradition, this event is turning into a nice little annual event.
- After releasing the trailer last month, green arrow #18 New Series Creative Team Chris Condon, Amount, Adriano Lucasand Hassan Otzman Elhou Officially taking over the adventures of Oliver Queen. Following last season’s time-spanning family adventure, this installment gets quieter and moodier, as Ollie investigates a series of murders in Star City. Condon’s script is tight with minimal dialogue, allowing Montos and Lucas’s stellar visuals to shine. This new run is off to an interesting start.
- Speaking of trailers, justice league unlimited #1 also includes a four-page trailer for the upcoming Hush 2 batman The storyline comes from the original “Hush” creative team Jeph Loeb, Jim Lee, Scott Williams, Alex Sinclairand Richard Starkings. It’s more of a tone trailer than a story trailer, with Hush putting snippets of text on the game board. If nothing else, it reflects the expansion of the Bat-family’s scope since the original storyline, and presumably the expansion of Hush 2’s scope as well. But will Batman’s mechanic Harold be there? Probably not.
