DEANNA DESTITO: What to do? impossible jones Coming?
Carl Kessel: I woke up one morning and knew how I would write plastic man. I’m not a person who spends a lot of time thinking. plastic manso I don’t know where this idea came from. I approached Dan Didio About pitching plastic man idea (without elaborating), he said DC is not looking for plastic man Thoughts at the time. So I reworked the idea, adding a bit of Harley Quinn (a character I absolutely loved writing) and the basics impossible jones There. (The name is right Al Cap’s The characters in Li’l Abner – especially Stupifyin’ Jones, a name I’ve always loved! David Hahnthis character really came to life, seemed to start writing itself, and developed in a direction I didn’t expect. (This happens a lot.) I like to think that the end result is greater than the sum of her parts.
DESTITO: What is your favorite part about playing in this universe?
angry: It’s hard to say. I absolutely love all the core supporting characters – I created Stinky Cat and Captain Flash in second grade! New Hope City only has five or six heroes (counting IMP), so there won’t be Avengers, FF, or X-Men on the streets. Also, when we add villains, I like that it puts our heroes at a disadvantage. While IMP faces at least one extremely powerful enemy, the tone of this book is more street-level – like the earlier Lee/Ditko/Romita spiderman comics. This is a tone I really like, and feels full of the most possibilities.
DESTITO: The witty dialogue is definitely engaging, at least to me. Is it easy for you to get into the character’s head?
angry: I can’t say I based anyone’s personality on a real person. Usually I choose an actor to play a certain character, at least in my mind. the spanish actress Ursula Corbero Great for IMP, both visually and tonally (e.g. money robbery), if you ask me. tom hanks At the time, being a smelly cat was great, as was being a young chicken Robert Redford Always the perfect Captain Flash. As for getting into their heads – most characters tell me what they would (or wouldn’t) do. They really wrote a lot about themselves, revealing new layers and even surprising me!
DESTITO: What is the current Kickstarter IMP about?
angry: It’s impossible to love, (Romance comic homage cover and title aside), it’s just as fast-paced and action-packed as our other IMP adventures – finding IMP the last one standing next to all the other heroes of New Hope after a brutal battle hero. She suddenly finds herself acting as a law enforcement officer without anyone knowing she’s actually a wanted thief, and she decides to use the position to find one last big score that could set her back for the rest of her life. She begins to cross paths with Demolition, a bad boy who is not employed by authority, and she finds herself attracted to him. Unfortunately, she was ordered to bring him in as well.
The book is about 60 pages long, with background information and posters, plus we have great Alt Covers Terry Dodson (he is still painting his) and Ty Templeton (Interesting IMP-finity cover, already completed)!
DESTITO: Why did you choose Kickstarter for this project?
angry: I’ve completed all the IMP projects on Kickstarter. It’s a great way to get ideas off the ground and into people’s hands. Plus, the Kickstarter comics community is the best! Everyone is helpful and always looking out for each other!
DESTITO: Any trailers for long-time fans?
angry: Excellently, impossible to love The subtitle is “Preface” for a reason! This largely self-contained story gets things in place and rolling, which is very important in our third IMP arc. An arc that will see IMP’s master plan either come to fruition or collapse! (Between you and me: even *I* don’t know how things are going to turn out yet!)
