The Beat reached out to Segura and Moreci for an interview to discuss their release plans and what excites them most about the new series.
Diego Higuera: Awakener Combining noir elements with a superhero murder mystery. What inspired this unique blend, and how do you think it enhances the themes of the story?
Alex Security: Black can exist in any environment. I’ve read great noir stories set in science, cheerleading, and more. It’s an idea, not a genre. Michael and I love movies, crime novels, and character-driven stories, and we always wanted to write an iconic work about the superhero ideal. So when we start thinking about ideas for what comes later Awakenerit starts with character – what happens when powerful people go too far? What will people do to resist tyranny and corruption? All of these things are very relevant, I think.
Fig tree: Each of you has been involved in major projects, from Star Wars arrive stranger things and Archie. How do your experiences in these universes influence your work? Awakener?
Segura: I think Michael and I are very familiar with the tropes of superhero stories, so it was fun to think about those tropes and also try to invert them in creative ways. A lot of what readers will see will seem comfortable and familiar, at least in terms of the context of the world in which the story is told, but what’s different is the type of story we’re telling.
Michael Moresi: The goal in all of these things is always the same: take something familiar and find a way to make it your own. This series explores “what the true definition of power is, and who should wield it.”
Higuera: Can you share how to do this? Awakener Exploring these themes through characters and their conflicts?
More information: What questions to ask these days. There is something to be said about great power/great responsibility, but it is much more than that. Even if you don’t have huge power, you always have power over something or someone, even if it’s just yourself. So what is your responsibility to make the right decisions and do the right things? Awakener Dabble in this territory, but only in a dramatic and grand way. It’s big, like a superhero story, but you can see what it means to make the right and wrong choices, and how that plays out and what it means for yourself and those around you. It’s a responsibility we all share and a power we all hold: making the right choice is a power we all have, and it always affects someone.
Higuera: Liberty Alliance and Paragon sound like they have an idealized public image. How do you peel back the layers of these characters and reveal their complexity?
Segura: That’s the fun, right? Show what’s really going on behind the scenes – a key element of any suspense drama. How do public faces match up with real people making these challenging choices? At its core, Awakener It’s a murder mystery drama that’s also a character-driven story about one person who must step up to stop the tide of evil that takes over everything she cares about.
Higuera: What can fans expect from the final two issues, especially now that the complete story will be collected in paperback?
Segura: Well, we won’t leave you wondering who the killer is, that’s for sure! The first arc is a complete story, but we’d love to spend more time in this world if demand arises.
Fig tree: Awakener has been compared Golden age, supreme power, and Black Hammer. Were there any specific inspirations from these or other comics that helped shape the world and tone? Awakener?
Segura: The big connective tissue between these books and our books is like, say, black hammer or supreme power, We wanted to take the superhero imagery and tropes we all love and try to use it to tell a different story. It’s a “between panels” mystery, where readers get a behind-the-scenes look at the inner workings of a JSA-like team and its destruction.
More information: Apparently these work, you can throw watchman Also there. or Astro City. But Alex and I, we just love pulp stories, thoroughly, and to me, that’s the most important part Awakening That’s it.
Higuera: Crowdfunding on Zoop gives fans the opportunity to interact directly with creators. What excites you most about this model and what impact do you hope it will have of the awakened travel?
Segura: I think one of our biggest common frustrations with this project is that it didn’t get in front of enough people. We’re grateful for the platform that allows us to present this story digitally for the first time, but we’ve always wanted to see Awakener Published and available for fans who want to read it. So I’m excited for the first arc to be completed and become something that we can all grasp.
