How to train your dragon Although it’s only 14 years old, that doesn’t make it immune to Hollywood’s current obsession with live-action remakes. The adorable DreamWorks fantasy adventure about Vikings and Pokémon-style pet dragons is being reshot this time with live-action. Based on the first trailer, at least the movie’s reptilian star looks great.
The film tells the story of young Hiccup, the village leader, and how he redeems himself through wit and a budding but forbidden friendship with a black dragon named Toothless. Gerard Butler will reprise his role as Hiccup’s father, but the rest of the cast is all new, including Mason Thames (black mobile phone) plays Hiccup, and Nico Parker plays Astrid, a fellow child. The first trailer for the remake shows Hiccup refusing to wage war against the dragons as his father demands, as well as his first meeting with Toothless.
Toothless, the main character of the movie, looks great. Imagine taking this creature from the original 2010 film and transforming it in Unreal Engine 5, only without any of the uncanny valley stuff. The rest of the movie looks less than spectacular, with thick fog and heavy special effects begging the question: why on earth should you make a live-action animated feature about epic battles and fantastical creatures in a mythical land untouched by time? version.
One is the profit motive, and the other is Hollywood’s creative bankruptcy. Even Butler basically looks like he’s just cosplaying a CGI version of the character rather than bringing something truly new and different to the audience. Perhaps as the remake gets closer, what Universal shows will become more convincing. At the very least, kids will appreciate another reason to watch Toothless’ cuteness and ferocity again.
