Reuters reporting Sony is in talks to acquire Kadokawa Corporation, which owns FromSoftware, Spike Chunsoft and many other Japanese companies. If successful, this would be a big move for Sony and will win over the likes of Eldon Ring, dark soulsand Danganronpaand countered Microsoft’s recent major acquisitions.
Reuters The report said “two people familiar with the matter” told them that Sony was in talks to acquire Kadokawa, which reported 2024 revenue of $1.7 billion. If successful, sources said the agreement could be signed in the coming weeks.
Kadokawa is a Japanese media conglomerate with a vast portfolio spanning manga, anime, travel, video streaming, and some of the biggest names in Japanese game development. This includes Spike Chunsoft, the developer behind Danganronpa, Mystery Dungeonand more recently, Dragon Ball: Sparks fly! zeroand co-developer of Acquire Octopath Traveler Interestingly, the developer of the just-released Nintendo exclusive game, Mario & Luigi: Brotherhood.
This will also be another occupation in the animation field, with companies such as Doga Kobo, ENGI, Glovision and others Anime News Networkas well as a large number of Japanese manga publishing houses. Since Sony already owns Crunchyroll and Funimation, there are obvious concerns about Sony’s dominance in this space.
Of course, the headline name is FromSoftware, responsible for dark souls, armored core, bloodborneand Eldon Ring. Having these names would be a huge coup for Sony, and of course raises huge questions about whether it will see some of the world’s most popular games become PlayStation exclusives. although Microsoft is clamoring to port its games to rival platformsSony hasn’t shown any signs of paying off, instead focusing on a belated PC port.
Although both parties declined to comment, the news has caused Kadokawa’s shares to rise by nearly a quarter.
Of course, with Microsoft acquires Activision Blizzard for $69 billionbut is still a major revenge move that could do some proper damage to Xbox if all these big names are taken away.
