The LEGO Group is expanding its headquarters in Billund, Denmark, and opening an innovation campus at Kløvermarken 31; the group broke ground on the site today. This will be the LEGO Group’s third campus in Billund. Prior to this, Legoland Park is scheduled to open in 2022 and Kornmarken Park is scheduled to open in 2025. Lego plans to open the factory in Postbyen in 2027.
The campus area is 50,000 square meters, which is equivalent to the size of 8 football fields. Of the 6,200 people employed by LEGO in Copenhagen, 5,900 from 90 nationalities are based in Billund. The innovation campus will occupy a green space owned by KIRKBI A/S. The new building will house 1,700 employees from product marketing and development, gaming, product and quality teams, including more than 600 designers. It will feature the world’s most extensive library of LEGO elements, with more than 20,000 items in 70 colours.
LEGO bricks and sustainability play an important role in the design, development and construction of the innovation campus. The building’s staff worked with CEBRA Architects for 18 months, working on various stages of the building’s design. The LEGO Group plans to build six overlapping modules, including four floors, a play area and an atrium. PlayWay will flow through the building to connect people and teams, while green space and increased natural light should encourage creativity. The building will be constructed using sustainable and FSC-certified wood. Construction will meet LEED Platinum standards.
“The Innovation Campus will be an inspiring workplace that respects the modular design of the LEGO brick. With colleagues’ input playing a key role in shaping the overall design, the campus will promote creativity, inclusivity and the free flow of ideas.
In addition to the company’s three headquarters campuses, LEGO has opened digital offices in Copenhagen, Billund, London and Shanghai. The innovation campus is scheduled to open in 2027.
