Nothing says Halloween like Halloween Jill Thompson’s Classic horror godmother. Luckily, Image Comics has just released Horrible Godmothers: This Is Your Childhood , a compendium of all our favorite stories, plus two new Horrible Godmother stories!
This story is like Halloween: a magical and enchanting story about Hannah, a little girl who finds herself on the “fear side” where she encounters her scary godmother and other creepy yet whimsical creatures. Carnival ensues!
Horrible Godmother debuted in comic form back in 1997, produced by the long-defunct Sirius Entertainment, before being picked up by Dark Horse and now Image Comics. It was also made into two animated specials by Canadian company Mainframe, Horror Godmother: Halloween Ghosts (2003) and Horrible Godmother: Jimmy’s Revenge (2005) Both films aired on Cartoon Network for years, becoming holiday classics and cementing their place in Gen Z nostalgia.
Apparently, however, they’re all in cartoon limbo right now, as this 2021 article from Vulture points out:
The DVD-quality version has been viewed over 3 million times, with nearly 10,000 comments lamenting Cartoon Network’s discontinuation of the show. YouTube Video Wizard even remastered it into 4K HDR in May 2020. Somehow, it lacks that nostalgic watercolor texture from the moment it opens into the mysterious cemetery. (The DVD is sold out on Amazon and Walmart.com, and is selling for up to $160 on eBay.
