Artificial intelligence looms over us every day, invading in various forms the creative realms long occupied by human artists. The film industry appears to be feeling the sting of this new technology, with famous movie stars including Robert Downey Jr. and Scarlett Johansson speaking out against the possibility of artificial intelligence replicating their likenesses.
Downey Jr. was recently interviewed by journalist Kara Swisher on her podcast with Kara Swisherpublished earlier this month. The iconic actor explained that he would happily sue Marvel if it used artificial intelligence to use his likeness after his death. Ever the optimist, RDJ doesn’t think current Marvel will turn to artificial intelligence to replicate actors’ likenesses. However, the rapidly evolving technology may draw attention sooner or later.
“Going back to the Marvel Universe, I’m not worried about them hijacking my character’s soul because there are three or four people out there making all the decisions anyway,” he said. “They would never do that to me, with or without I.
While his confidence in Marvel’s current brass is admirable, a change in leadership could lead to a reliance on artificial intelligence tools in the future. Regarding the prospect that he might not know his future top executive, Swisher asked what to do next. Robert Downey Jr. responded: “Well, you’re right. I would like to state here that I intend to prosecute all future executives based solely on the norm.
During the interview, Swisher asked RDJ for clarification because he may have died when Marvel was utilizing artificial intelligence in this way. “But my law firm will still be very active,” he replied.
Then again, he’s not the first and probably won’t be the last Marvel superstar to speak out against artificial intelligence. Earlier this year, Scarlett Johansson questioned OpenAI’s use of her voice in its personal assistant toolset. While OpenAI denied using Johnson’s likeness as the voice of “Sky,” the company did (rather suddenly) remove the voice entirely, while promising to revisit how they select voices for such tools.
The artificial intelligence industry can’t seem to catch a break, and earlier this month, AI companion website hacked, data shows users simulated child abuse scenarios.
