Movie review:
- Dean: It’s a beautiful masterpiece. Mysterious, dark and mysterious. Everything about this movie is great – the score, the story, the atmosphere… the setting is gothic and moody, the music is on point, the acting and script even more so; the lasting, unshakeable scenes set by Polanski And the tone is nothing to break, he has clearly carefully considered every possible factor to create an immersive and unforgettable experience for the audience. There is not a single part of the movie that will bore you. I can’t think of anything wrong with this movie. I can’t find any plot errors. The actors give superb performances, especially Johnny Depp, and the film is well directed. This movie is a great example that you don’t need a lot of action to make a good thriller. I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish. There are so many hidden gems in this film that you’ll need to rewatch it over and over again to fully grasp the craft of Polanski’s epic filmmaking! And I’ve seen it a dozen times. That’s the great thing about this movie.
- CinemaSerf: Johnny Depp is almost at his best in this diabolical detective story. He is an unscrupulous but knowledgeable New York rare book dealer who is entrusted by millionaire Frank Langella to verify the authenticity of a text. The “Nine Gates of the Shadow Kingdom” may or may not summon demons, or at least grant the owner some sort of satanic power. His search for the truth involves deception, lust, many murders, and a cat-and-mouse game with deadly consequences. Emmanuelle Seigner plays the appropriately mysterious “Girl” – an angelic being with ninja skills, while Lena Olin plays the sexpot well Bad guy in the form of a kitten (with claws). I enjoyed this; it’s a complex supernatural thriller that doesn’t try to impress with cheap special effects (although the music can be a bit annoying at times); it’s well written and has a great cast. However, 2.5 hours is too long; there are a lot of establishing shots that could have been trimmed/discarded to speed up the pace.
