Back in 2016, Nintendo tweeted an image of someone in a Mario costume peeking out from behind a curtain. This tweet was intended to make fun of Switch to be revealed soon. But some people think this strange image is creepy And it quickly became a meme on the Internet. According to two people who have worked for Nintendo, the company is not happy with the situation.
as found IGNprevious nintendo minute Hosts Kit Ellis and Krysta Yang explain the story behind the strange Mario image in a recent episode Popular podcast for two. According to Yang, the image occupied due to this tweet“very controversial” within Nintendo.
“The person who had the idea was a former head of social media,” Yang explained, clarifying that it was not her co-host. “This person commissioned a photo shoot of a Mario costumed character in an office… They basically took a photo of the Mario costumed character behind the scenes doing this.”
“That actually raises some concerns, because Nintendo certainly doesn’t want to live up to people’s expectations. It’s so much within the realm of speculation. What could this possibly be… that’s too much for something as big as a console reveal? So things didn’t go too well, and then it was forgotten about, and people were a little upset about it, to be honest.
Ellis further explained that with these “big” announcements and events, you always need “more assets than you think.”
“In this case, there were obviously no assets to pair with this news, and no one wanted to post a tweet without an image. So it was like, ‘What can we do?
“There’s always some spreadsheet. Here’s every asset we need, every size, every use. I think in this case they must have missed it, otherwise why would they shoot Mali at the last second? What about the photo of O in the shower?
“[Nintendo] It’s frustrating because they’re not using the official stuff,” Yang added.
So will we get another weird image of Mario crawling around curtains when Nintendo finally teases it (probably not too far away) switch 2 announcement? According to Ellis and Young, don’t count on it.
“They’ll be ready next time,” Ellis said. “This time they will prevail. It won’t happen again.
