The heartbreaking ending of Chicago Med Season 10 Episode 3 left me in tears.
Hannah is going to be affected more now and even though I hate her, I’m still here for it.
Due to Hannah’s devastating loss and other reasons, her mental health issues may resurface.
Why Hannah lost a patient in the heartbreaking finale of Chicago Med Season 10 Episode 3
When her patient Eloise bleeds to death on the operating table, Hanna is devastated.
Hours after the successful caesarean section, Eloise was rushed back to the operating room due to bleeding problems.
In the final minutes, Hanna discovered that the bleeding was coming from Héloïse’s liver, not her uterus. By then, it was too late to save her, leading to a devastating scene: Hannah tried for forty minutes to resuscitate her, but had to be talked out of it.
The heartbreaking finale of Chicago Med Season 10 Episode 3 happened for unknown reasons.
Eloise may have had an existing condition that no one recognized, or Hannah may have made a mistake during the C-section that worsened her condition.
Regardless, Hannah could barely cope with the loss, and she continued to perform chest compressions long after the patient’s death, eventually running out of the operating room in tears.
Why Hannah is so sad about her patient’s death
Hanna’s grief over the loss of her patient isn’t just about Héloïse, although there are some strong emotions at play.
After spending some time trying Trying to convince Héloïse to trust her, Hanna is happy to be able to help her, but the plot twist of Héloïse’s death completely throws her off.
She had promised Héloïse would survive the surgery, so the unexpected death felt like a betrayal of the fragile trust she had built.
Plus, Eloise becomes almost a friend.
As a professional, Hannah knew not to get too close to her patients, but they had several private conversations in which Hannah shared some of her own feelings and experiences with family planning.
This makes Héloïse more than just a patient; Hannah loved hanging out with her, but now that she’s gone…worse, Hannah might blame herself.
Héloïse had earlier shown painful symptoms that Hanna believed were typical post-pregnancy reactions, which, like other doctors had done, made Héloïse distrust Hanna in the first place.
Eloise’s seemingly unnecessary death is enough to break Hannah’s heart, but something else happens that makes it worse.
In the same episode, Hannah confronts Ripley, accusing her of “going behind his back” to keep him from giving up his career for Scully.
Lennox also asks her if the ER really needs a full-time OB-GYN, hinting that Hannah might be the next to be fired.
Coupled with all the other stresses, it’s no surprise that Hanna fell into grief after Eloise’s death.
It’s not just that she’s lost a patient, or that the patient’s daughter will now grow up without a mother; It’s that, on top of everything she loses in this episode.
After the heartbreaking finale of Chicago Med Season 10 Episode 3, what happens next for Hannah?
The pain, guilt, and sadness Hannah feels at the end of the episode will likely last a long time.
The idea of a person with an addiction problem relapsing during a difficult time is a bit of a tired TV trope, but in this case it works.
Hanna’s strong emotions about Héloïse’s death, especially coupled with the other issues she was dealing with, may tempt her to numb the pain in numbing ways.
I can’t say I like the idea itself.
Someone close to me died of a drug overdose, and I’ve spent most of my life helping others avoid the same fate, so I don’t like it when a character I love succumbs to addiction.
But it will be a strong drama that will also convey the message that even the strongest people can relapse during times of stress.
This is important because sometimes people can become overconfident and think that if they haven’t used in years, they won’t behave that way anymore, so they have no plan to protect themselves from temptation.
Even if Hannah does go down this route, she’ll likely have some serious mental health issues from losing Eloise, and that could last for the rest of the season.
If Hannah becomes a liability in the eyes of the hospital, she could lose her job, even if she no longer uses it.
Her relationship with Ripley is also up in the air. He was trying to reconcile with Héloïse, but now their roles may have been reversed and Hanna pushed him away.
