Decentraland, the Ethereum-based Metaverse platform, is preparing to release a desktop client that will significantly improve its graphics and performance.
The update aims to address limitations of the current browser-based version, which has been criticized for its technical shortcomings.
The desktop client will enter open beta on October 22, providing users with a more seamless virtual world experience.
What can we expect from this update?
The upcoming desktop client introduces enhanced visuals and improved game mechanics. While Decentraland retains its cartoony feel, the new version features a higher level of detail, smoother animations, and more dynamic environments. The platform’s performance has also been significantly upgraded, resulting in improved frame rates and reduced load times.
Decentraland engineering manager Agnieszka Besz confirmed that the desktop client supports more simultaneous users in the same space. “With over 200 avatars in the same place, customers have never had any problems,” Besz said. Previously, realms were limited to 100 users due to performance limitations.
This update marks Decentraland’s shift in focus towards enhancing the platform’s social features. The developers plan to introduce features such as missions and a badge system, which will track player progress and promote social engagement.
Events like Decentraland’s three-day music festival held every November could become a key test of the platform’s new ability to handle large gatherings.
What’s next to Decentraland?
While the desktop client is currently the priority, Decentraland is considering entering the virtual reality (VR) space in the future.
The team sees VR as a way to provide a more immersive social experience, but says it will only pursue VR integration once the performance of the desktop version is fully optimized.
Currently, the desktop client is a critical step in improving the overall functionality and user experience of Decentraland. The public beta will be available to Mac and Windows users on October 22nd.
