Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will bring the fan-favorite hero back to the big screen this December, but it won’t be the only game adaptation Sega is releasing. One of the company’s classic arcade games, “Shinobi,” will also hit theaters after being adapted by Universal Pictures. A director has been confirmed for the project.
Via The Hollywood Reporter , Sam Hargrave has signed on to direct the Ninja movie. Hargrave is a former stuntman and stunt coordinator who directed both of the “Extraction” movies on Netflix starring Chris Hemsworth. Hargrave is also set to direct Extinction 3 . Ken Kobayashi will write the script for “Patience.”
The original Shinobi hit arcades in 1987 and put players in the role of heroic ninja Joe Musashi, who is forced to seek vengeance for his clan against a ninja crime syndicate known as the Zeed. Shinobi (Japanese for “ninja”) spawned 13 other games across arcades and home consoles. The latest game in the series is Shinobi 3D, released in 2011 for the Nintendo 3DS.
A new Shinobi game was announced at the Game Awards last December. The game will feature a retro 2D style, but no further details on its release date have been revealed.
