Director Todd Phillips 2019 clown The movie seems to hit the box office at the right time, weaving between Trump’s later years and the global coronavirus outbreak, and making a killing in the post-pandemic era.Avengers: Endgame MCU exhausted. There seems to be no progress this time Clown: Way of the Pas de Deux. Also, at least based on early reviews, it sounds like it’s going to be a terrible movie.
Joaquin Phoenix returns as the downtrodden, dysfunctional Arthur Fleck, whose clown persona takes him from lonely recluse to courtroom spectacle. This time, Lady Gaga as Lee Quinzel aka Harley Quinn is at his side, and her voice propels the sequel’s musical jukebox premise to its strange and decidedly uneven conclusion. The movie opens in theaters today, and so far critics are slamming the high-concept comic material Rotten Tomatoes score 39%. This puts it on top catwoman but below batman forever.
Jack Coyle for Associated Press Called it “a theoretically interesting movie, but a surprisingly dull one.” Comment by David Fear rolling stones Titled“‘Joker: Pas de Deux’ sends a message to fans: Fuck you.” Nick Sheger Commented on daily beastMeanwhile, he first called the sequel “so bad, so boring, it’s absolutely shocking.” Review by Johnny Oleksinski for new york post Bemoans “Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix singing for no reason in a pointless sequel.” The consensus seems to be that the film made some bold choices but never promised enough to make them Land.
Despite being a sequel, it mostly focuses on retelling the events of the first film and Fleck’s ultimate culpability within them, while employing a clunky set-up that leads nowhere. This is a particularly cruel passage From Germain Lucier io9 Review:
All along, Clown: Pas de deux Constantly teasing the audience in unsatisfying ways. Will Arthur and Lee’s musical fantasy work? They don’t do this. Does Lee’s enthusiasm for “Joker” say anything specifically about the nature of celebrity? Not really. We wanted a longer scene and there wasn’t one. Scenes that we wanted to be short ended up being very long. Every time the movie sets up a question that needs to be answered, but either leaves it unanswered or flips it completely upside down, it becomes more and more gripping. That may be the point, but it doesn’t entirely work.
Matt Singer is at screen shatter pointed out that Gaga surprisingly had little time to enjoy the big musical, and her limited screen time was devoted more to proactive flirting with Fleck. Justin Clark at tilt magazine Criticized the film as “cinecentrism”. “On the one hand, it’s obsessed with the uncontroversial belief that making Arthur too relatable might create a real-life, non-unique killer,” he writes. “On the other hand, it acted like making the Joker or Lee too funny, or their musical sequences too extravagant, might have brought it too close to the comics and cartoons that Phillips wasn’t really loyal to.”
The hits kept coming. “Joker: Pas de Deux is a sombre, unpleasant piece that makes it difficult to know why it was made or for whom,” Manohla Dargis begins exist new york times. More diplomatically, Liz Shannon Miller result Wrote: “Some parts of the movie are certainly engaging, but they’re largely driven by the passionate commitment of the core cast. Phoenix and his HR Giger-esque shoulder blades are back, this time… He tap dances! It’s like the movie dances around its points.
I’ll leave you with this thoughtful summary Joker 2promises and failures From David Ehrlich independent connection:
Needless to say, “Folie à Deux” didn’t give people what they wanted. Instead, it actively appeals to the disappointment of its own fans in order to illustrate how Arthur has been cruelly co-opted by the fantasies of the collective unconscious—lost in the dreams that his followers want for themselves. That’s all well and good for a meta-sequel that isn’t afraid of alienating its target audience, the problem is that Phillips isn’t giving people anything else. His films are bold enough to defy expectations (and smugly savor the growing dissatisfaction it engenders) but not thoughtful enough to offer something more interesting in their place.
At least no one has to trudge to the theater Listen to Gaga’s music. The film itself will no doubt be released online before the holidays.
