Nintendo and Sony are teaming up to produce a live-action “The Legend of Zelda” movie, with actor Haley Joel Osment hoping to star in the film. In a new interview, Osment said he has been a fan of the series since he was a kid and was eager to play Link. He joked that maybe he wasn’t cut out to play Link now that he was 37, but no one could tell.
“Oh, my hat is in the ring, they know my hat is in the ring,” he told IGN. “When Link did all this, he was 37, right!? Seventeen, thirty-seven? As a kid, I was like, ‘Obviously they’re going to do that. [Ocarina of Time] The movie will be released soon, and the story has been written for you! You’d think, ‘It’s very challenging to make a compelling two-hour movie.’
Specifically, Osment said he would like to see the lore from Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask incorporated into the Legend of Zelda movie. He said: “These were my first Star Wars [trilogy]”.
The “Zelda” movie is in development with “War for the Planet of the Apes” and “The Maze Runner” director Weiss Ball. Spider-Man producer Avi Arad is producing the film, which is being co-produced by Nintendo and Sony Pictures – with Nintendo providing “more than 50 percent” of the film’s financing.
Casting announcements have yet to be made, but Euphoria’s Hunter Schafer is hoping to play Zelda following a fan campaign.
Director Ball has previously revealed his vision for the Legend of Zelda movie. “I have a great idea,” he said. “I’ve been thinking about how cool a Zelda movie would be for a long time… I wanted to fulfill people’s biggest wishes. I knew it was important, that this [Zelda] franchise, for people, I want it to be a serious movie. A true escape from reality.
In addition to the live-action Zelda movie, Nintendo is also working on a Super Mario Bros. Movie 2, and just recently, Toad voice actor Keegan-Michael Key announced an exciting news.
