We desperately need more Thanksgiving-themed comic covers! Now Marvel and Terry and Rachel Dodson Our prayers are being answered with a Turkey Day-themed variant cover Ultimate Spider-Man #11.
For years, when we did any Thanksgiving and comic-themed illustrations, we used this admittedly awesome JLA cover by the late, great Carlos Pacheco, In it, Power Girl obediently bent down and handed a roasted turkey with all the ingredients to a group of hungry JLA employees.
But Marvel has upped their game with this Spider-Man family cover. In the current “Ultimate Spider-Man” series, by Jonathan Hickman and Marco Cecchetto, Peter Parker is a happily married husband and father who spends his free time surfing the Internet. No need to worry about secret identities, readers seem to love it.
To celebrate, we see the Dodsons’ character, Mary Jane, triumphantly delivering her own roast turkey to a smiling family of spiders… now.
Spider-Man’s secret double life is revealed as he spends a picturesque Thanksgiving feast with his wife and children. But don’t be fooled! Peter Parker’s life is far from perfect, with threats like Black Cat, Kraven the Hunter, and the Sinister Six on the horizon, not to mention the impending return of The Creator, a crazy alternate universe where Reed Richards is the mastermind behind this corrupt world.
This cover, like Pacheco’s, is a reference to Common Rockwell’s famous Saturday Evening Post cover, but Dodson adds a few homages to Spider-Man in the first Spider-Man movie. Leaving an immortal handstand kiss. Peter also tried to steal a chicken leg – who hasn’t tried that? — but if he took the turkey off the plate, he would not be asked or given forgiveness.
Regardless, when you need new turkey-themed comic art, Marvel has you covered!
