If anyone is wondering how DC Studios differs from Marvel Studios, here’s the best answer. James Gunn just confirmed that the studio has greenlit a movie called dynamic duowhich will serve as the origin story for Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, both of whom become Robin, and will be told through puppet animation.
Deadline first broke the news, reporting that the film will “tell the early days of Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, aka Robbins.” But it’s worth noting that when fans hear the term “dynamic duo,” we don’t think of two Robins. We think of a Robin and a Batman. So we’ll see how that plays out, or if it does.
Gunn confirmed the project on his social media…
Very excited to announce the release of the latest DC Studios/Warner Bros. Pictures animated film, DYNAMIC DUO, which tells the story of Robin…or should I say, Robins, as Dick Grayson and Jason Torres… Virtue like that. This all sounds very interesting, but we have questions. Questions like, what does puppet animation look like? Well, the movie was made by a company called Swaybox; if you go to its website, the style reminds you of something like a Laika. So maybe it’s a Coraline– style look, but in the DC Universe. Deadline describes it as “a combination of CGI animation, practical elements of stop-motion animation, and live-action real-time performance. The result is long-form storytelling that is said to be visually stunning, dynamically expressive, and more human.”
Screenplay by Matthew Aldridge, dynamic duo The film will be directed by Arthur Mintz, co-founder of Swaybox and Theresa Andersson. DC Studio heads Gunn and Peter Safran and director Matt Reeves are among the film’s producers. Batman.
“I’ve been wanting to make a movie with Arthur and Swaybox for years and wanted this movie to be dynamic duoA very special and unique Batman and Robin story is a dream for families,” Reeves told Insider. But despite his excitement, the film won’t be part of the Levi’s universe. It’s hypothesized that it could serve as an origin story for the larger DC Universe, or integrate into its otherworldly banner, but it’s unclear if that’s one of those. When asked about the film’s status, a source close to the production only confirmed the news: The film is not part of Levi’s universe.
That’s interesting, right? We have an animation show, biocommando, Start the Gunn/Safran DC Universe. Then a Superman movie, a Green Lantern movie, a Supergirl movie, and maybe a Robin origin story with the Muppets? It’s definitely not Marvel, and we’re happy about that.
