The best comics to buy for October 2 include some seriously brilliant books – and you’re already buying them Combat Moves #1right? — but overall, it’s been a week dominated by DC Comics, which wraps up its big summer event on the same Wednesday with the launch of an ambitious new publishing series. So I’ve included DC picks in my recommendations, and as always, you’ll find those below along with the usual list…enjoy!
The most worth buying comics on October 2, 2024
Absolute Power #4
writer: Mark Wade
artist: Dan Mora
Colorist: Alejandro Sanchez
Writer: Ariana Maher
Publisher: DC Comics
With the last remaining resistance fighters fighting it out on the bloody island of Gamora, Batman and Superman find themselves locked in a fierce battle! Amanda Waller has now come too far to give up – is it time to call in reinforcements from beyond the Veil of Diversity? The fate of our heroes—and the future of the DC Universe—will be forever changed in the shocking finale of the Absolute Power saga, and justice will rise from the ashes…
Why it’s cool: This issue marks the end of the summer for DC Comics. With these stories, you know from the beginning that the heroes will win in the end, but the question is, what will the status quo look like when they do? Man, it feels like this event did some really interesting things about the current state of the DC Universe, but I won’t spoil it here! We’ll have a full roundtable discussion on this issue tomorrow at the DC Round-Up space.

Combat Moves #1

Vaughan debuts Combat Action and is joined by artist Chris Burnham to create a shocking post-world Doomsday fable! In a hostile future London ruled by children, a young American boy runs for his life from a gang of xenophobic British punk thugs, but he has a secret weapon they didn’t expect…
Why it’s cool: New 10 issues combat moves The maxi series was launched this year, and it can be said that there are many stars. There are two stories in this book, the first is written by Garth Ennis with art by Keith Burns. The second installment, written by Brian K. Vaughan and drawn by Chris Burnham, is the former’s first comic-for-hire in a long time. In short, you don’t want to miss this comic. Check back with the Wednesday Comics column for a full review of this issue.

DC All In Special #1
writer: Joshua Williamson and Scott Snyder
artist: Daniel Sampere and Wes Craig
Colorist: Alejandro Sanchez and Mike Spicer
Writer: Steve Wants
Center distribution: Dan Mora and Tamra Bonvillain
Publisher: DC Comics
Following the events of DC’s blockbuster storyline “Absolute Power,” the heroes at the heart of the DC Universe grapple with the deep divisions in the world around them and usher in a new era of unity. And it comes at just the right time──because Darkseid is back. Superman must rally every hero on Earth to hold the line against an entirely different version of the King of Apokolips as they improve our cosmic defenses and prepare for war… When the first wave of attacks lands, the shockwave Will affect every series in the series. But they don’t know…a greater threat is yet to come. Because there is another Earth: the Absolute Universe. Here, DC’s biggest icons grow up with fewer advantages and face greater opposition than ever… while miraculously retaining the timeless heroism that has inspired fans for decades. But as their world hurtles towards a terrible fate, can they really protect the light that shines within them?
Why it’s cool: It was one of DC’s big one-offs that told a story and kicked off a publishing overhaul across the board. And it does both very well. The comic is worth reading on its own, but even more so if you’ve just finished it absolute power and/or plan to read any of the new DC Absolute books. Also, art rules.

Rage #6
writer: Garth Ennis
artist: Jason Burrows
Colorist: Nolan Woodard
Writer: Rob Steen
Publisher: Marvel Comics – MAX
You thought things were looking bleak and tough last period. You’re right, but things get worse for our “hero”.
Why it’s cool: It’s the conclusion to a brilliant and brutal war comic that, as one would expect from writer Garth Ennis, turns our ideas of heroism on its head and asks us who the real hero of this story is. It’s bloody, brutal, gruesome, and another great addition to Ennis’ long list of classic war comics and Punisher stories.

Plastic No More #2
writer: Christopher Cantwell
artist: Alex Lins and Jacob Edgar
Colorist: Marcelo Maiolo
Writer: Becca Kelly
Publisher: DC Comics – Black Label
The Justice League won’t listen to him, and his wife and kids want nothing to do with him… but Plastic Man doesn’t need any of them to fulfill his grand plan of cheating death. It all starts with, uh… kidnapping Metal Man. It’s for a good cause! He swears!
Why it’s cool: I really enjoyed the first issue of this series and I enjoyed the second issue just as much. This is a very well done superhero character study. Also, as you can see from the cover, it brings Metal Man into the narrative, which is a great choice. I don’t know how much more bluntly I can put it – don’t miss this comic.
