Verizon customers across the country are reporting network outages that put their phones in SOS mode. There may not be an immediate fix – it may require Verizon’s network to resolve its issues – but there are steps you can take to try to get your phone working again.
Mashable’s Kimberly Gedeon has all the details about the outage, but the gist is that many iPhones are stuck in SOS mode. This is a feature provided by Apple that allows you to call emergency services or send text messages even when service is unavailable. It is suitable for users in areas with poor signal coverage.
This indicates that a large portion of Verizon’s network is down. Verizon says it’s working on fixing the problem.
“We are aware of an issue that is impacting service for some customers. Our engineers are actively engaged and we are working quickly to identify and resolve the issue,” the company said in X’s statement.
Not every Verizon customer is experiencing this issue – my Verizon phone and WiFi are currently working – but it does seem to be a big issue. Here’s what you can do.

Phone stuck in SOS mode: What to do
Honestly, there’s no real solution other than Verizon’s network getting back online. We will update this story when that happens.
You can try putting your phone into airplane mode – or turning it off completely – to try to reconnect to the network. But if the network is still down, you may still be unable to connect.
You can also use Wi-Fi calling. This method allows you to send text messages and make calls over Wi-Fi. You can choose to use popular messaging apps such as FaceTime or WhatsApp.
Otherwise, you can keep trying to restart your iPhone or, more likely, wait for Verizon to resolve the issue.
