How do you follow up on some of the most critically acclaimed games of the past decade? Many thought Nintendo couldn’t transcend the sheer open-world wonder and physical toy box creativity that created Revelations like “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild”. However, that’s what Nintendo seems to be doing tears of kingdomintroducing a host of new ways for players to interact with the world and expanding Hyrule’s already vast realm into the sky and deep underground, arguably improved upon its remarkable predecessor so much as to render it obsolete.
In between these two games, we also got Link’s Awakening, The 2019 remake of the classic Game Boy adventure game replaces the original’s pixel art with toy-like stereoscopic visuals in an attempt to recreate a modern retro feel. The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom Taking the same charming art direction and applying it to a completely original story featuring our beloved Princess Zelda of Hyrule. The main difference between playing as Zelda and stepping back into Link’s boots is that she doesn’t directly fight enemies with the typical sword and shield, at least most of the time. With Terry’s magic, Zelda is able to create “echoes”, clones of the items and monsters she encounters in Hyrule. When traversing the game’s dungeons and puzzles, my go-to strategy was always to stack beds on top of each other to form a makeshift bridge across wide gaps. While this often helped me early in the game, I ended up having to think more creatively in later dungeons. For example, when the gap was too wide for my bed bridge, I stood on the edge of my incomplete creation and also used an echo, which when picked up would blow a wind current in the opposite direction of Zelda, pushing her away Far enough to reach the other side. For a limited time, she can enter “Swordsman Mode,” allowing her to swing a sword, shoot arrows, and throw bombs, all things Link can do as the protagonist. At times, this feels like a concession to long-time Zelda players who just want to get back to Link’s gameplay. In this context echo of wisdom’s mechanic, it feels quite powerful, even if it’s only active until Zelda’s energy meter is depleted. Part of Zelda’s fighting style involves using echoes to do her dirty work for her. This means your Bomb Fish Echo may be destroyed by enemies before it explodes. Blade Fighter mode essentially becomes like a “press to win” button since Zelda can only spam bombs. Additionally, Zelda can constantly drink smoothies she makes from various ingredients throughout Hyrule to replenish her energy meter. This approach effectively gets her into and staying in sword-fighting mode more often and for longer periods of time. As a result, this unfortunately ultimately renders much of Zelda’s Echo arsenal trivial, as Sword Fighter mode can even make quick work of bosses.
Combat is at its best when you rely on echoes, and finding new ones is half the fun of actually using them. Every time I defeated a new enemy, I got excited scanning them and creating their echoes. It feels like I’m playing Pokemontry to collect as many things as possible. However, this brings me to echo of wisdomThe most prominent issue: echo management.
There are dozens of these echoes, and it can be a real pain to cycle through all of them while looking for the specific echo you need for your particular situation. There are some useful sorting tools, such as the ability to organize by your most recently used or most recently acquired tools, but I wish the game had allowed you to organize your Echo collection manually.
Exploration also plays a huge role echo of wisdom. The map looks similar links to the pastfeels like some kind of homage to the team’s past. The game is also surprisingly long, taking around 25-30 hours to complete the main story. It’s filled with dozens of side quests and optional dungeons. Others, meanwhile, are quite complex, involving a multi-step process where you end up with the powerful ability to build robots with huge AOE attacks. They’re a huge boon, especially in boss fights.
I feel like the rewards for completing side quests are more valuable than in most RPGs. While you may earn more rupees to spend in stores, you may also encounter new Echoes, which may prove helpful later. In fact, some of the most useful Echoes are hidden in optional dungeons, making exploration even more rewarding. Earlier, I encountered a giant plant that could propel itself towards monsters, constantly dealing damage with its appendages. It was an incredibly powerful echo at that point in the game that allowed me to defeat many early game bosses.
While exploration is fun and rewarding, I do wish Zelda was faster. She was running very slowly, which was incredibly frustrating. She has a spin move that doesn’t do any damage, but combined with running, actually makes her move much faster than her normal sprint. So whenever I’m out on a trail run, I’m constantly pressing the right bumper button while moving to break into impromptu spin sprints.
