Just in time for GTA 5’s 11th birthday present, GTA Online has finally added anti-cheat software to the PC version of its infamous teleporter.
How are things going so far? Well, pretty chill, unless you’re one of those players who ended up being locked out due to the platform you’re on, unable to jump back to Los Santos to distract from all the talk about GTA 6 possibly being delayed or not (as of now, the answer seems to be no ).

As revealed in the patch notes for Online’s latest update, the specific anti-cheat software added by Rockstar is BattlEye, a name that may be familiar to players who have played Destiny 2, Fortnite, or PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. If you only play story mode and don’t feel like running it, Rockstar has also added the option to disable software, which will disable offenders on a hardware level (i.e. if you’re caught, your computer will most likely be inoperable) from launching GTA Online), suitable for single-player games.
Aside from some obvious FPS teething problems that don’t seem to be universal, the short-term result is what I can only describe as a grinder’s or car-satisfaction fanatic’s nightmare. “So I played for a whole hour [plus] In the public lobby, it doesn’t take long to load, [or to] In and out of the property,” one player wrote, “no one teleported me to Cayo/LSIA/their apartment. No lag. Nothing. Just 27 people causing chaos in the common lobby. Even some commercial products for sale [a] people [server] Many years later. It feels good. I’m very happy.
So, for now at least, you can enjoy a little bit of heaven on earth, as long as you avoid the ever-present vandals and modders don’t find a way around the software in double the time, as some players fear. Those using Steam Deck or Linux won’t be able to enter this paradise, though, and the addition of BattlEye will prevent them from running GTA Online, as Rockstar doesn’t appear to have included the game in its list of games with BattlEye anti-cheat features. , can be played on Deck via Steam’s Proton Compatibility Tool.
Frustrated players are filing complaints with Rockstar’s customer support in hopes of convincing the developer to do something about it at some point in the future, so we’ll have to see if it eventually releases an update that allows GTA Online to run on Deck again.
