WGB hints at remake of Days Gone

Jordan Middler of videogameschronicle.com seems to be hinting at a remake of Bend Studios’ Days Gone.

If you’re thinking “Wait, Days Gone didn’t come out in 2019?” you’re absolutely right. The action-adventure game, starring biker-turned-zombie-killer Deacon, launched in 2019 and already has a PS5 patch installed to make the game run more smoothly.

However, that’s apparently not enough to stop Sony from remaking it. Just the other day, insider Jeff Grubb was discussing the Horizon Zero Dawn remake that appeared on the ESRB website. During the chat, Grubb commented that he’s heard that the upcoming PlayStation State of Play (the game itself has yet to be officially confirmed) will feature “some other remasters” that will be “less cool” than Horizon. Exciting.”

This has led to speculation about what remake Sony might be working on, but some seem confident they know exactly what Sony will announce. Enter Jordan Middler, podcaster and writer for VGC.

In response to a tweet that focused on Grubb’s revelations, Jordan replied: “If he’s mad that his character is in Astro Bot, then he’s going to lose his mind over it.”

Jordan’s comments were a dig at Days Gone creative director John Garvin, who was fired from Bend Studios. Gavin has had a pretty bad rap since leaving the studio, often harshly criticizing his former team, Sony, critics, etc. for Days Gone‘s relatively modest success.

Just recently, Gavin complained about Days Gone’s protagonist’s cameo appearance in Astro Bot, writing on Twitter: “Haha, I see my character reduced to a cartoon promoting some little game, I’m soo Strict? Sit down, my brother, my lord is talking.”

Midler’s comments were directed at Gavin, but also strongly hinted that the upcoming remake will be Days Gone. If true, this would be a puzzling decision from Sony, because why bother remaking a game that’s only five years old? I actually enjoyed Days Gone, but I don’t have any desire for a remake, although I’m secretly hoping that, if it’s real, it will perform well enough that a sequel can eventually be made.

Also, you might be wondering, if Sony is willing to spend the money to remake a relatively new game like Days Gone, why wouldn’t they spend that money to re-release a game like God of War, which is a commercially successful game? What about games that are more successful both online and critically? If this turns out to be true, I can only assume that someone at Bend Studios has a deft tongue to pull this off.
