2021’s “Battlefield 2142” is considered disappointing by some old “Battlefield” fans, but developers at DICE say they will take feedback to help improve the next game. Recently, the first key details about the next Battlefield game surfaced, and for now at least, the developer seems to be saying all the right things to help people believe that the next game might be a return to normalcy.
Of course, only time will tell if the team can deliver, but fans are already excited by the news that the new Battlefield will seemingly follow the old game’s lead and undo some of the things Battlefield 2042 did. On top of that, the new Battlefield game won’t have 128-player matches or specialist roles – two much-criticized elements of Battlefield 2042.
The game is set in the present day, which is also a welcome change for fans and a change of pace from recent games taking place in the future and past. It sounds like the new Battlefield game may also have battle royale elements. At least four studios are developing a new Battlefield game, which doesn’t yet have an official title.
Following the first official reveal at an EA event this week, we’re gathering all the key information about the next Battlefield game.
When will the new Battlefield be released?
EA has yet to confirm a release date for the next Battlefield game, but reports suggest it could be released as early as October 2025. There is a gap of three years. EA said that the new “Battlefield” game is undergoing game testing almost every day, and some kind of community testing program for the new game will be launched in early 2025. Still very far away.
Pre-order the new version of Battlefield
The new Battlefield game isn’t available for pre-order yet. Fans should be highly suspicious of any website or store claiming to accept pre-orders for the game.
New “Battlefield” trailer information
There’s no trailer for the next Battlefield game yet. However, the first concept art was released in mid-September, showing scenes of chaos and various large-scale battle scenes, in line with the tradition of Battlefield.
New battlefield platform
The platform for the next Battlefield game has yet to be confirmed, but fans can expect it to be released on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox consoles. Nintendo is developing a new console, possibly the Switch 2, but it’s too early to tell whether the next Battlefield game will come to the platform. Also unknown are EA’s plans in the action realm.
EA’s studio, run by Halo veteran Alex Seropian, was developing a mobile game, Battlefield, when the company abruptly canceled the game and closed the studio. EA’s specific plans for the future of the mobile version of Battlefield are unclear.
New Battlefield stories, locations and characters
Very little is known about the story, setting, and characters of the new Battlefield game. However, it has been confirmed that the game will be set in the present day, following Battlefield 2042 (set in the future), Battlefield 5 (set in World War II), and Battlefield 1 (set in World War II). After that, the series’ pacing changed. The modern setting prompted a positive response from fans who wanted to see the series return to the present.
Insider Gaming reports that the new Battlefield will take place between 2027 and 2030. The report further claims that the game is played in multiple locations around the world, including the United States and Gibraltar. The first piece of concept art depicts a scene in Gibraltar, the website said.
“If you look back at the pinnacle or pinnacle of Battlefield, it was Battlefield 3… the Battlefield 4 era, where everything was modern. I think we had to get back to the core of Battlefield, and do it really well, And then we’ll see where it goes,” Vince Zampella told IGN. “But I think for me, [that] Battlefield 3 and 4 are the pinnacle of the battlefield feeling. So I think it’s nostalgic for the players, for me, and even for the team. That was the heyday…although I’d also say 1942.
What will it be called?
The new Battlefield game doesn’t have a name yet, but Insider Gaming reports that the EA team is currently “weighing” options, in part by launching an investigation. Some of the options reportedly include Battlefield 6 or simply Battlefield.
Battle royale?
EA already has a popular battle royale game out there, developer Respawn’s Apex Legends. But a report from Insider Gaming claims that the new Battlefield game will also have its own battle royale mode, which may be developed by Ripple Effect. However, there is nothing else going on at this stage. EA has previously experimented with a battle royale mode called “Firestorm” in Battlefield 5. It’s a free-to-play indie game, and the setting could be similar to how Activision Blizzard delivers a high-quality Call of Duty game with Call of Duty: Warzone.
Who is developing new battlefields?
DICE, creator of the Battlefield series, is leading the development of the multiplayer elements of the new Battlefield game. Motive is the team behind Star Wars: Battlefront II and the upcoming Iron Man game, and is at the forefront of the game’s single-player campaign. Meanwhile, “Fast” and “Burnout” studio Criterion is handling “content and experience.” Meanwhile, Ripple Effect is creating “a new battlefield experience,” which some believe could be a battle royale.
When current Call of Duty boss Vince Zampella took over as head of the Battlefield franchise, he talked about creating a “Battlefield world” of connected experiences. This four-studio approach appears to be part of that ambition. The team was initially a stronger one as Master Chief creator Marcus Lehto ran a studio called Ridgeline that contributed to the vision, but as part of broader cost-cutting As part of the plan, the team was shut down by EA.
Weapons, destruction and gameplay
Insider Gaming reports that the DICE team is aiming to have 45 different weapons available at launch, which is more than double what Battlefield 2042 will have at launch. The report also states that the team is aiming to have 10 multiplayer maps available at launch, with more maps likely to be available after launch.
The Battlefield series is known for its destruction elements, allowing players to bulldoze buildings and shoot at walls for either tactical or comedic purposes. It looks like the new Battlefield game will continue this (of course), with Insider Gaming reporting that the game will feature “caliber-based destruction” similar to what Rainbow Six: Siege offers. On the other hand, the report claims that players will be able to pick up and move downed players, and that this feature will also be available in the rumored battle royale experience.
On the multiplayer front, Zampella said 128-player matches will be gone. Battlefield 2042 launched with these massive matches, but players complained that the maps were too big and the number of players too small (even with bots inserted into the matches), and DICE later scaled them back. It looks like DICE won’t repeat this mistake with its next game.
“128 players, does that make the game more interesting? It’s like… numbers for numbers’ sake don’t mean anything,” Zampella told IGN. “We’re testing around what’s most interesting. It’s a different gaming space, and I think you have to design around it. So we’re designing something that’s more similar to previous Battlefields,” Zampella said. “I’d rather have nice, dense, really nice, well-designed play spaces. Some of them are really nice. I can’t wait for you to see some of them.
Another much-criticized element of Battlefield 2042 is its specialist role, which replaces the traditional class-based system that Battlefield fans know and love. Zampella joined the team after deciding to do so, and while he applauds DICE’s ambition to try new things, he admits that “not everyone is going to like it.” So with the new game, “experts aren’t coming back,” Zampella said. Ra said. “So classes are the core of Battlefield, and we’ll get back to that.”
Participate in “The Final Hour”?
Battlefield and Call of Duty are two of the top games in the shooter space, and Zampella said he believes it’s “possible” that the new Battlefield game will outsell Call of Duty. However, Zampella emphasized that EA wanted to create a product that was different from Activision’s “Call of Duty” series.
“I mean, is this what we want? I mean, not directly, but always,” he said of Battlefield outselling Call of Duty. “We’re not trying to beat Call of Duty. We’re making something different, we’re making something that’s our own. But, yeah, it’s definitely possible.”
