Puella Magi Madoka Magica The Movie Magic Night Rises (Say that three times fast) There’s a new, but completely incomprehensible trailer.
Last year, after keeping fans waiting for years, the first trailer for the next Madoka Magica movie, Walpurgisnacht Rising, was finally released, and while it looked great, it was definitely just a bunch of stuff with absolutely no context. Lenses, don’t really tell the story. Beautiful shots, mind you, but obviously you have to actually watch the film to understand it. Things have been a bit quiet since then, aside from the fact that it was pushed back from winter 2024 to winter 2025, which is a pretty big jump, but on top of what was already a years-long wait. How many months will it take? Luckily, though, a new trailer was released this week… which doesn’t make anything any clearer, but for die-hard fans, it’s a chance to do some theory building.
The trailer is once again filled with mostly tangential scenes, including a scene of Madoka and Homura dancing, which I’m sure people will be fine with, but what’s more interesting is the appearance of new characters. There were three girls, one with green hair, one with light pink/white hair, and one with orange hair, all wearing the same uniforms as Madoka and the others. Again, it’s mind-boggling who they could be, and there aren’t similar characters in previous films, so clearly the production team is cooking up…something.

The original Madoka Magica series aired back in 2011 and only ran for 12 episodes in total. Afterwards, several compilation films were released with re-recorded voices and some new animation, and the third film, Rebel, featured an entirely new storyline that culminated in a cliffhanger. The third film was released in 2013, so Madoka fans have really been waiting for a while – hopefully there won’t be any more delays.
