Here are the winners of the 2024 Ignatz Awards, presented during last weekend’s SPX. Now in its twenty-seventh edition (held annually since 1997), the awards draw attention to outstanding independent and alternative work across ten categories.
Winners from Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom and France had a uniquely international feel to their work, winning in many categories. Canadian wins three awards for eponymous pulp collective anthology pulping Won awards in two categories: Best Anthology Sami AlwaniHis contribution to “The Art of Joy” won the Outstanding Story Award. Heavy creative cousins Jillian With Mariko Tamaki Won the Best Graphic Novel Award roaming – The book has already received a lot of praise and accolades in the mainstream – including three Eisner Awards for the book and its author.
British-Bangladeshi creator Shazreen Khan Winner of the Outstanding Online Comic Award for his critically acclaimed queer urban fantasy web series ask! (It has been running since December 2018 and is currently crowdfunding for its fifth series). leo fox Won the Outstanding Comic Award for Mind-Body Meditation my body is unraveling (Silver Sprocket Publishing).
Jamaican cartoonist living in the United States Robin Smith Awarded Outstanding Artist, French Artist Leia Muravec Win the Japanese Comic Newcomer Award Saito Natsuna Get Outstanding Collection sea lightning (Translated by Alexa Frank, published by Drawn & Quarterly)
While many creators are from the United States, the only American to win this year is Hannah Templer Ongoing ragtag space gay romp space knight (Published by Top Shelf) Winner of the Outstanding Series Award – the third installment in the webcomic-turned-graphic novel series is about to be released.
