Donald Glover, who plays young Lando Calrissian in Solo: A Star Wars Story, hopes he can inject some “fun” into the sci-fi series.
The way people talk about Star Wars, it’s easy to forget that the originals were just these three silly movies with big explosions, ridiculous plot twists, and little green puppet men giving surprisingly sage advice. There’s plenty of room in its universe for some serious moments, but it seems like games these days retain a basic sense of fun more, with shows like The Mandalorian and The Acolyte leaning more towards drama most of the time . Actor Donal Glover (also known for his music under the pseudonym Childish Gambino) seems to be hoping his upcoming Lando movie will make Star Wars feel good again interesting.

“I just want to make it fun,” Glover told the Wall Street Journal in a recent video interview. “As a Star Wars fan, I think it’s important – there needs to be more fun,” he continued. “It’s hard to have fun right now. It’s hard because there are very serious things going on. The weird thing is, Those are the only things that connect us so I understand why it’s serious but also part of the human experience and I believe it’s our responsibility to enjoy it but I just feel like we’re lacking in that area.
“Star Wars, I love it, but sometimes it’s very serious and sometimes it’s too serious, and everything to do with Skywalker is too serious,” Glover continued with a laugh. The actor first played the classic Star Wars character in the 2018 prequel Solo: A Star Wars Story. “Lando” was originally planned to be a Disney+ series, with “Dear White People” and “The Haunting of Hill House” director Justin Simien serving as showrunner.
Disney later decided against the idea of releasing Lando as a series, opting instead to make a movie, with Glover and his brother Stephen now writing the script. The film does not yet have a release date.
