I don’t mean to warn you, but some Final Fantasy XVI players on PS5 have recently found their wonderful little game invaded by a giant black blob or box that could ruin poor Clive’s day. No, this isn’t DLC, it appears to be part of some graphical issues that have arisen following recent console firmware updates, and Sony and Square Enix say they are investigating the issues.
Browse Reddit or Twitter and you’ll find dozens of posts from players showing off or talking about the problems they’re having. My personal favorite is a clip I’ve embedded below, about someone having to escape the void, which seems determined to chase them and swallow Mr. Rosfeld temporarily.

“Yesterday’s PS5 system update caused FFXVI to experience a major graphical error during certain cutscenes and part of the gameplay,” one player tweeted about this particular issue. “The error progressed to a black screen. Temporarily fade away by opening the “active time” legend menu. “
Others reported that after the latest PS5 firmware update was deployed, their consoles suddenly hard shut down while playing games, with one Reddit user writing: I had the same thing happen to me yesterday, a complete hard shutdown after a cutscene, Even having to rebuild the database and repair the external hard drive is like a power outage. Won’t play it again until the game is fixed.
Thankfully, Sony and Square Enix have stepped in to intervene in the case, with the official Final Fantasy account tweeting: “Following the recent release of a PlayStation 5 system update, there have been reports of game crashes and graphical issues. We are currently working with SIE is cooperating with the investigation and we apologize for any inconvenience caused and please await further updates from us.
So, that’s it. Hopefully Clive and company won’t be swallowed by the void too many times before a fix comes. Perhaps this is a warning that Square Enix will be issuing the same blank slate if anyone starts making particularly weird mods for the game as soon as it lands on PC today.
