According to THQ Nordic, death will soon appear again. In surprising news, they’ve announced that Diablo 2 – arguably the best game in the entire series – is getting a remaster for PS5 and Xbox Series consoles. I bet you don’t have this on your 2024 bingo card.
THQ Nordic is keen to point out that Darksiders 2’s improvements have nothing to do with the recent Darksiders trailer. In other words, it looks like Darksiders 4 is still a possibility, unless Nordic is teasing something else, in which case it’s going to have a lot of angry fans shouting about it.
This new remaster will be based on the dead-end version of Diablo 2, itself a PS4 and Xbox One re-release of the original PS3/Xbox 360 game.
According to the press release, this new “upgraded version” of “Darksiders 2” will feature 4K resolution, ray tracing, and enhanced lighting and shadows. PS5 players will receive full haptic feedback support from the Dualsense controller, and games will benefit from faster load times across all platforms.
It has not yet been revealed whether the PC version will receive any upgrades.
The new Diablo II Deathinitive Edition will be available on PS5 and Xbox Series consoles on October 15 for $29.99 USD/€29.99.
However, there are several ways to get it cheaper or even for free. Apparently, PlayStation customers who pre-order the game before October 14th will receive a whopping 50% discount, bringing the price down to around $15/€15.
If you already own the PS4 version of Deathinitive, you’ll get a free upgrade when it releases.
On Xbox, if you own the Deathinitive version, you can also get the upgrade for free. To address this issue, THQ Nordic has reduced the price of the Deathinitive Edition by 50% on the Xbox Store, down to $15.
It’s a generous plan and overall a surprising announcement. He was in the first game of the series. Still, it’s a pleasant surprise, as Darksiders 2 is a very fun action game with a badass protagonist, tons of loot, great combat, and a cool world.
Still, I can’t help but wonder about the financial decisions behind it. As much as I love the Diablo series, I’m not sure there’s a huge market for a remaster, especially when most people who want a remaster probably already own the Deathinitive Edition and thus get this upgrade for free. Presumably this is to bolster the franchise ahead of the full reveal of Darksiders 4, which may finally bring all four Knights of the Apocalypse together.
Whatever the reason, I’m really glad I have an excuse to play Darksiders 2 again. This gave me some hope that the original Darksiders would get the same treatment.
