Just like Premier League football clubs sign new players on ridiculous length contracts (here’s a simplified and probably incorrect statement) to spread the cost and avoid breaching Financial Fair Play rules, I’ve come to view the PS5 Pro as a cost/year Reward type situations. Ultimately, it all comes down to when we hit the inevitable Game Console 6.

No one knows (maybe Sony does) when PS6 Release is imminent, but will most likely be in late 2027, 2028, or 2029. That’s a pretty big gap, and it’s good to know the exact release year of the PS6 before potentially buying a PS5 Pro. As an early adopter of consoles, I’m planning to buy a PS6, but I’m hesitant to buy a PS5 Pro (yes, $700 is a lot!), in part because its longevity is a big unknown.
If the PS5 generation ends in 7 years, I will only get 3 PS5 Pros, which equates to about $230 per year. Eight years of running the PS5 equates to $175 per year, while running the nine-year (which will likely push it) generation means five years of running the PS5 Pro for just $140 per year.
I think you can see my thoughts here. I’m very disappointed with the $700 price of the PS5 Pro. I wish they could drop the price to no more than $600 (maybe a 1TB HDD?), but even then, I’m already trying to convince myself; yes, I can justify the PS5 Pro, and yes, I do Need one.
The price per year is one thing, but so is the number of years themselves. If Sony stood up and said, “Hey Tom, you can’t play PS6 until 2029 at the earliest, take that,” I would buy a machine that would provide a better experience for my 5-year-old. That’s a long time. I was 40 years old, one of my kids was getting old enough to drive, and Robert Downey Jr. was probably going to rejoin the Marvel Universe, then leave and rejoin the Marvel Universe.
But Sony won’t tell me (or you, sorry) when the PS6 will launch. So I might only have to face it for three years. That’s not bad. Three years later I am still in my 40s and relatively still a young adult. I wouldn’t pay $230 a year. But wait, what if the next three years were the most exciting games in PlayStation history?
We just don’t know. Rumor has it that the PlayStation State of Play Showcase will be taking place before the end of September, which might shed some light on this, but I honestly can’t remember a time when I knew so little about what exclusive games were coming to PlayStation.
That’s all I have for now. This was definitely the beginning of my slow transformation of the PS5 Pro from pariah to must-buy. I hated myself, but there was no other way. This is how I think. Let’s see where I am on pre-order day.
