Such as “buy dog food home” and “sea lightning” focuses on middle-aged men trapped in a cycle of self-pity and self-reflection. Saito gently teases their pain and self-involvement while capturing the pathos of these men as they relive childhood friendships and lost loves. In contrast, “Captive” tells the story of three siblings who visit their ailing mother, who suffers from dementia and resents her loss of agency. The siblings struggled to balance the pain of her acerbic personality while trying to honor her in her final moments. “Lonely Death Building” records the gossip of a group of eccentric old people, and death comes to the residential area where they live.
