Destiny 2 is moving to two “mid-sized” expansion packs per year because its annual add-ons are “starting to feel too formulaic”

Bungie has announced that starting in 2025, it will switch to providing two “mid-sized” expansion packs for Destiny 2 per year, instead of the previously planned annual expansion packs. Why? Well, according to the game director, things became “too rigid” and felt a little “formulaic” when it came to these add-ons.

The change came shortly after Final Form received critical acclaim in June, but Bungie then laid off 220 employees and made a number of other major changes. These cuts were reportedly in the works long before the expansion arrived, and even though it exceeded everyone’s expectations, nothing could stop it, with Bungie claiming it remains “committed to Destiny” following the cuts.

As teased, it now provides some more information about future support. Big news? The stated focus of delivering annual expansions has been abandoned in favor of “two medium-sized expansions, one every six months,” and four free “major updates” per year.

“I’ve personally been working on Destiny for 15 years, and it still excites me creatively,” game director Tyson Green wrote of the change. “I can say this. There are not many games.

“We love making annual expansions and are especially proud of Final Form. But the truth is, they dominate nearly all of our development efforts. We need to free ourselves to explore and innovate how we deliver Destiny 2 content so that We can then invest in areas of the game that are more impactful to players,” he continued, adding that these new expansions “will be a departure from the essentially unchanged one-off campaigns we’ve had since Shadowkeep. Structure, each will be an opportunity to explore exciting new formats instead.

In addition to announcing the change, Bungie also provided an update roadmap for the game, which you can view above. In the summer of 2025, you’ll get the paid expansion currently titled “Codename: Apollo,” with free updates codenamed “Arsenal” and “Surge” released from summer to fall. Then, in Winter 2025, you’ll get a paid expansion codenamed “Behemoth,” with two currently unnamed free updates also rolling out during that time.
