Image Comics has been practicing the art of teasers lately, and yesterday they put out a pretty good teaser that hints at Grant Morrison’s return to comics.
In 2021, Morrison ended filming “Green Lantern” and returned to writing. Since then, he has been content with the achievements of comics. After all, as the 64-year-old MBE told me in 2016, “There’s nothing left. In fact I don’t have any dream projects right now. Although they have also been offering Stories from the Vaults to people on their Substack some time.
But as the trailer shows, Morrison may be tempted by one thing: ice cream. They are only human after all and we all love ice cream.
Conventional wisdom and an in-depth analysis of the fonts used in the trailer suggest Morrison may be collaborating with ICE CREAM MAN, an anthology series written by ICE CREAM MAN W. Maxwell Prince and art Martin Morazzo and Chris O’Halloran. The game has gained a cult following for its Twilight-like story of “sadness, wonder, and redemption.” It’s a format comics have always excelled at, and Hollywood has taken notice. The show was once optioned by the disastrous short-form platform Quibi, but fortunately, that option lapsed. But just a few days ago, reports surfaced that the comic was once again in development, but as a movie, in production alongside Beetlejuice scribes Alfred Goff and Miles Miller Set to accommodate Sony’s Screen Gems tag.
So when you add it all up – Grant Morrison, master of grief, wonder and redemption, and now screenwriter, working with a comic so imaginative that it can contain many expressions… well, just kidding Bar!
But there may be another explanation. Maybe…Grant Morrison just likes ice cream. What flavors are they looking for? Rocky Road? Activated carbon? Or, take it upon yourself to choose one of the delicacies of the Indian gourmet company Vadilal, such as Badam Carnival or Chikoo. They are all very good.
All kidding aside, Morrison is one of the greatest cartoonists, so having them return to comics, even briefly, is almost as much to look forward to as a big bowl of ice cream.
