As they gather together, Delia explains the cause of Charles’ death, and viewers are treated to a dramatic stop-motion animation sequence illustrating the events.
We see in the sequence that Charles is involved in a plane crash while on a birding adventure. After surviving a plane crash in the ocean, a shark swam in and bit him in half.
From that point on, Charles is a half-eaten, headless ghost brought to life through practical makeup and costume effects.
Gough explained the inspiration behind the scene in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, saying: “The way Charles dies in this animated production is Tim’s nightmare death.
“He actually said this: ‘My nightmare is, I’m in a plane crash, I survive the plane crash, I almost drown, and then a shark eats me.'” We were like, ‘Well, this What a genius. So this is how he died.
