superstar writer Kelly Thompson and famous artists Matias DeJulius team up again to launch their first creator-owned series, a sci-fi adventure Cull. Have cooperated before Jessica Jones: Blind Spot for Marvel Comics, Cull publisher: Image comics.
In a small seaside town, five friends set out to shoot a short film near a forbidden rock on the beach. It was their last summer together before they went their separate ways, but one member was hiding a secret motive for the shoot. Unbeknownst to her friends, Cleo attempts to find her missing brother. Their adventure takes them to the almost alien liminal space between the two worlds, where things change dramatically for our lovable protagonists. The style is similar to 80s sci-fi adventures, e.g. ET: extraterrestriallarge dose power rangers Impactful, this comic is sure to appeal to genre fans and anyone interested. This deal collects the first five issues of the series, which was originally announced as a mini-series. This is a great standalone read, but I’m sure I’m not the only one craving something more.
The science fiction and suspense elements of these series are substantial and entertaining. While it doesn’t necessarily invent new concepts or ideas, it combines many different influences into something new and unique. The floral, pink, and deadly liminal space our characters inhabit is brilliantly designed to be both funny and terrifying, and beautifully realized in the writing and artwork. It captures the tense balance between horror and intrigue very well, leaving the reader with more questions than answers. There is a superpower element to the series that does feel a bit neglected in terms of on-page presentation, but ultimately does enough to support the plot and themes well enough to make up for the lack of explanation or exploration.
Kelly Thompson Its popularity has exploded over the past few years, and you can see why. Her writing style strikes a good balance between broad appeal and unique style, and she has great conversational skills. Each character has a unique voice and characteristics, perfectly blending soft, empathetic moments with powerful action beats. Combine that with some truly unsettling science fiction moments and a palpable sense of adventure, and this book is a winning combination.
The characters in this series are sure to be loved and sympathetic by the target audience. All five core actors get a moment to shine, which makes the show feel well-rounded in terms of character development. Cleo is probably the most mature, as her grief and trauma drive the initial storyline. The series is ultimately about her coming to terms with what happened, and you processing her experience with empathy and care. Lux is also a bright spot, a strong-willed and hot-headed member who helps to fully enrich the team’s dynamic. I’m excited to see how these characters change and grow, because I think the rest of the cast still has a lot of room to grow.
Artwork by Matthias DeJulius May not be suitable for everyone. His realistic style may not appeal to people who have an idea of what comics “should” look like. However, those who are able to board the ship are in for a treat. His visual style dominates the book, and with every page I was struck by the level of detail and control he had on the page. thompson It freed him completely and he could paint whatever he wanted. This is great stuff and contributes greatly to the atmosphere of the book. It has such a unique visual identity that it lends itself well to film comparisons and homages. I hope he and Thompson continue to work together.
comprehensive, Cull It’s a fantastic adventure that takes characters and readers on a journey of acceptance and growth. Adhering to the classic style, Steven Spielbergtype flare, and power rangers Affecting the sensibility, this is a great read to keep the collaborators on a winning streak thompson and July’s. It’s sure to be a hit with readers and well worth a read if you’re even remotely curious. This requires taking some risks, but it looks like an exciting prospect.
