From “Avatar” to “Guardians of the Galaxy,” “Columbia” and more, Zooey Saldana has starred in many action movies over the past two decades. Now, Saldana hopes to transition into directing an action film of her own.
“I’ve never seen a female director named James Bond,” Saldana told Variety at the Toronto International Film Festival. “I love The Equalizer. I watch crime shows, so, maybe in the future. I’m always drawn to heist themes. The Heat is a movie I need to watch and analyze at least once a year, and Michael Mann The way it was put together, the way everyone executed, so, I would love to start with something like an action heist.
It may take a while for Saldana’s ambitions to become a reality. While the actress has already filmed her role in Avatar: Fire and Ash, she still has to complete the fourth and fifth films in James Cameron’s Avatar franchise. While Saldana didn’t offer any hints about the future of the next film, she did explain why she feels the Avatar movies are special to her.
“That’s all the technology Jim uses [in Avatar that] Make the performer proud and prioritize his or her entire performance,” Saldana said. “We’re not lending our voices. We’re not doing anything. In 2009, Jim was as ahead of his time as ever. He was a scientist at heart, so he was creating things that would take time for people to understand. He helped me Realize that I should be okay with that. At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter if people get it or not. Avatar is going to be around forever and will inspire generations to come. So that’s his legacy and I’m a part of it.
“Avatar: Fire and Ash” will be released on December 19, 2025.
