The title of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has been kept a secret for a long time out of fear of spoilers, apparently because it once had a different name.
Tears of the Kingdom contains major spoilers, so read at your own risk.
Back in 2019, Nintendo surprisingly revealed that a sequel to Breath of the Wild was in the works, but it didn’t have a proper title at the time. For a few years, everyone just called it the sequel to Breath of the Wild (which Nintendo usually calls Breath of the Wild) or Breath of the Wild 2. The title: Kingdom of Tears, but a year ago the developers said they didn’t want to reveal it yet for fear of spoiling the game. I’m one of the many people who is confused by this because the title Tears of the Kingdom doesn’t really tell you anything. But as revealed in the recently released Master Works book, it turns out this was because the game had an entirely different name late in development.

It turns out, through some time travel and other shenanigans, that dragon is Zelda herself. According to a Nintendo Everything translation, Master Works revealed that the game was originally called Tears of the Dragon, but series producer Eiji Aonuma was concerned that it would “emphasize the light dragon.”
Aonuma continued: “It would be a problem if the light dragon was Zelda, which would also have an impact on the title. One of the title candidates that ended up being “Dragon Tears”. But in the title Using the keyword “dragon” in the logo was a bad idea, we wanted to include the dragon pattern in the logo, but ultimately decided to emphasize the light dragon (laughs), but for no other benefit. …
“We talked a lot, and then at one point a staff member said, ‘How about Kingdom?’ With Tears of the Kingdom, we felt like the word could be connected to the light dragon, and we could use the dragon in the logo, whatever. With the title decided, the logo finally became what it is now.
While that’s not a spoiler to begin with, considering the way you find memories in this game is through tears, and all of them tie into The Legend of Zelda, putting two and two together Probably easier than the final title and.
Kingdom Tears only launched last year, but Nintendo has already released another game, Echoes of Wisdom, the first in the series to let you play as Princess Zelda herself.
