When we think of voice acting, the last thing that comes to mind is what the actors wear while recording. While they may choose clothing that is comfortable and won’t be picked up by the microphone, one thing they don’t have to wear is their character’s costume. But this is not the case with the Japanese dubbingVoice actor for Tim Burton’s new movie, Beetlejuice Beetlejuicethey went all out during the recording process, donning the costumes and makeup of their respective characters.

The Japanese voice actors made some interesting comments about the costumes and makeup used during the dubbing process.
Koichi Yamadera (Beetlejuice)
When I heard it was full body dubbing, I thought: “What does that mean? It must be hard”, and sure enough it was! It took dozens of times more time, manpower, and energy than normal dubbing. This was the first time I had planned four hours of prep time and even longer before putting on a cast. It turns out that I became a voice actor Because I wanted to be someone else instead of myself, it was a great memory and I’m glad they paid attention to even the smallest details.
Michael KeatonFor the role of Beetlejuice, he put a lot of effort into his voice, so I worked hard and pushed my voice to the limit. Dubbing for foreign movies has a different thrill than dubbing for anime, so stay tuned. I’ve made so many, so please spread the word!
Sakamoto Maya (played by Lydia Deeds)
Halloween was becoming more familiar than ever, so I thought, “Maybe I’d like dressing up like this,” and I did a full-body voiceover. This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I hope I can show Lydia, who may seem scary at first glance, but also has a softer side. I first saw Beetlejuice when I was in elementary school and loved the movie so much that I rented it on video multiple times. Winona Ryder is one of my favorite actors, so I never thought I’d be with her after all these years, and I’m really surprised and happy.
Miyuki Sawashiro (Dolores)
At first I thought full body dubbing would be like this role playBut when I heard they wanted to recast the character with the same Hollywood quality, I was excited to get involved. During the four hours of applying makeup, my senses were busy with the tackiness of goo and softness, the stretchy feel of goo and the smell of an art room. I’m looking forward to seeing the finished product. This was the first time I wanted people to look at me so closely. As the makeup affected me, the scars increased little by little, and I felt like I was getting closer to Dolores.
Ise Maria (played by Astrid Dietz)
At first, I had no idea what full body dubbing meant. The key is that I transformed into Astrid, with the same clothes, hair, makeup, and even added freckles with makeup. this is first time for me voice actor It was fun to approach the character from the outside. It’s a horror-comedy movie that’s perfect for Halloween and full of Tim Burton’s worldview, so I’m really excited to be a voice actor.
Chiaki Kobayashi (Jeremy)
The voice actors throughout the film were really impressive, so it was a dream come true and I feel so honored to be a part of it. It’s not often that you get to develop a character to this extent, so being able to play this character like a man possessed was a wonderful experience for me. This is something I’ve never done before. I think Jeremy is a key character in this movie and I was excited when I played him, wondering “What’s going to happen!?” The film is filled with the lively, fun charm and darkness that only Tim Burton can deliver Atmosphere.
Toshiyuki Morikawa (Rory)
I think this is a full-body voiceover project on par with Tim Burton in terms of crazy ideas. I had a lot of fun shooting it, and it was fun in the sense that I got rid of my signature bangs and glasses. I think this is a project that only a Tim Burton film could pull off, and I’m honored to be a part of a unique world that only he can express. This is a very lively and interesting movie, and the voice actors in the full-body dubbing version are also amazing, so I hope you will like the subtitled and dubbed versions.
Kazuhiro Yamaji (Wolf Jackson)
It’s an incredible combination. The full-body dubbing special makeup was made in advance and took four hours to prepare on the day, so it felt like the shortest dubbing time for me. Of course, it was a first for me, but I was so surprised and excited that I thought: “So far!?” This is a story that is steeped in the world of Tim Burton from beginning to end. I had a lot of fun voicing Wolfe, by Willem Dafoe. Please look forward to Wolf’s final scene.
Keiko Toudo (Delia)
When I heard I wanted to do a full body dubbingI thought it meant they wanted to put in so much effort, so I took on the dubbing and filming. Wearing a wig on stage is very common so I can perform without any discomfort. I think in anime they sometimes use character-specific costumes, hair, and makeup, but this is the first time I’ve gone this far in a western. Tim Burton’s worldview is on full display, making this movie a lot of fun. My character, Delia, is constantly changing moods; just when you think she’s screaming, she suddenly changes her mind, so it was very challenging and fun to play that character.
While we won’t see the voice actors on screen, hopefully the costumes and makeup will provide more inspiration for them. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice It will be released in the United States on September 6 and in Japan on September 27.
