I need to talk about the Eternal War PvP mode in Starfighter 2. As of this writing, the servers are a bit spotty, and there aren’t a ton of maps or game modes. But even with all of these issues, it’s still one of the most refreshing PvP experiences I’ve played in recent years. Yes, that includes the popular FPS you think of. As well as any escape shooter, battle royale or bandwagon game you have in mind. They were missing a key element.
Simple. PvP in Star Marine 2 is a pure experience. Six players challenge six other players of different professions. It’s also truly different, with unique abilities and weapon options that force you to play the game differently. Each team can only have two people per class, which inevitably leads to diversity and synergy in team composition. Oh, you need some fronts? Good news, you’ll almost certainly get one.

It also inspires chaos in all classes! Sooner or later, some guy with a faster network connection or a faster trigger finger will steal the character you want. So go ahead and choose another one! Mess with it and see what happens. Within the first few hours, I naturally browsed through the entire course selection. You know what I learned? I couldn’t shoot a sniper to save my life, but I did enjoy looking for sneak attack angles on the map.
The slow trickle of new weapons encourages you to, you know, get really good at using them. If you’ve owned a short-range bolt-action rifle for six levels, one would expect you to understand the gun’s effective range and stop trying to beat snipers on the map. It gives you a decent amount of time to figure out if you like the gun, and if you don’t, you can go back with the old unlocker. If you didn’t like the original release, you were out of luck. Like I said, it’s not without its problems.
The map shown isn’t too large at all, but there’s more room for maneuverability than you might first think. Small side passages wrap around larger, more popular teamfight hotspots. There is a large opening in the wall that the attack and vanguard classes can pass through. Of course when you start you’ll be dashing along the main roads, but there are only Enough options to keep things interesting.
Do you know what real drugs are? Lack of a damn battle pass. In fact, there are no side goals or FOMO at all. No timed unlocks, no nonsense. Do you want to unlock new gear for your Space Marines? Improve your class by playing games. Want to unlock new skins for your weapons? Win the game. Literally just to win and unlock all skins (except paid cosmetics). We’ve all been there in games where some member of your team tries to get 5 headshot kills with a pistol without actually achieving the goal, and you can’t even blame them since many games these days encourage this approach. In Starfighter 2, you go online with a single goal. win!
So, yes, I’m pretty sure I’ll be playing PvP in Starfighter 2 for a while. In my review, I was disappointed that I didn’t get a chance to try it before its early release, and while it wouldn’t have changed the score I gave the game, it did address some of my concerns. Once the servers are running without major glitches and some new content arrives, this will be one of my go-to games for the foreseeable future.
