Can we foresee angry primates finding great success with sticks and resentment? Not long ago, “Black Myth: Wukong” was announced to have sold 10 million copies in a few days. Now, the Chinese game seems to have passed the 18 million mark.
However, the news was released via Bloomberg rather than Game Science itself, so it’s not entirely clear whether the data is 100% accurate. VGInsights also claims to have sold over 18 million copies, but again, they don’t have access to real sales statistics and instead use a variety of data to draw their conclusions.
“‘Black Myth: Wukong’ sold 18 million copies in two weeks, which is one of the fastest sales in the global game industry.” The official X account of Bloomberg Market said.
If accurate, Black Myth: Wukong will become one of the fastest-selling games of all time, surpassing the likes of Hogwarts Legacy, Elden Ring, and Kingdom Tears. Given the staggering pace of these sales, Black Myth: Wukong will likely become the best-selling game of 2024. Or two. Maybe even five.
Most of the sales come from China, where people seem eager to support a local game that also captures the Western imagination. VGInsights currently estimates that 76% of sales come from China, which in this case is approximately $13.6 million.
Of course, that doesn’t take away from the game’s incredible success.
VGInsights also posted some other impressive statistics, including $850 million in total revenue.
I’ve been playing and been hesitant to comment. Quick thought: It’s good, although I don’t think it’s as good as 18 million copies. Before you jump on me and beat me to death with a stick, this is a great game to play. But I think it also has some flaws, which become more apparent the longer you play it.
Regardless of my thoughts, the public clearly loves tales of monkeys versus gods, and the game science fully deserves their success. Let’s enjoy a great game and get rewards, shall we?
