Mobile games don’t have to be meaningful, as evidenced by the enduring popularity of a series in which players attack pigs (green) with catapulted birds (flying).
But even in the confusing world of mobile gaming concepts, Fox’s Football Islands Gloriously in limbo.
Hyper-casual gameplay spans a variety of different genres, including football, building, collecting, and multiplayer tit-for-tat. These types are not natural bedfellows, any more than the Fox is the obvious choice for a football match, but it all feels like a dream.
This is how it works.
Your first port of call is an island called Aztlan, a lush green habitat dotted with palm trees and construction sites.
Click on one of these sites and you will start constructing a building. Once a building is complete, you can click again to upgrade it, then click again and again throughout the island until each building reaches its final form.
You then move to the next island, earning stars to determine your position on the leaderboard.
But hang in there. It’s not that simple. Construction is an expensive business, and you’ll need to constantly fill your coffers with gold coins to fund projects. What’s the easiest way to earn coins quickly? That’s right: by playing football.
football part Fox’s Football Islands Sees you shooting towards a goal – or more specifically, towards a target nested within a goal.
To shoot, you slide your finger along the screen in the direction of your target. Unless there is wind on the course, in which case you have to adjust for gusts. Some targets will also move, requiring you to guide your shots.
Hitting a target can have a number of different results, the most common of which is a large amount of coins.
The size of this cascade depends on the amount you stake. While a basic shot costs one unit of energy (more on that later), you can double or triple your bet in exchange for a correspondingly larger reward, as long as you don’t miss.
You can also attack other players’ islands randomly or in a targeted manner, destroying one of their buildings and leaving them stranded on their way to overtaking you on the leaderboard.
Sometimes you’ll be presented with a moving target that opens the way for a major payday, while other times you’ll be given a special gauntlet that lets you stop an attack on your own island.
There are familiar elements in it Fox’s Football Islandsincluding an energy system that limits the number of shots you can take (unless you pay more), gems for buying gold, a tiered upgrade system, and more.
But what really helps is the way the game manages to blend a ton of different genres together Fox’s Football Islands Really stand out.
One minute you’re enjoying a physics-based football game, the next you’re expanding your territory by dropping coins into the construction of Aztec pyramids or ancient Egyptian monuments.
The multiplayer is equally varied, combining the extremely cunning with the extremely rewarding.
For example, when you’re not getting back at players who wronged you or targeting your friends for lol, you’re trading in the lovely relics you’ve earned throughout the campaign.
We are not sure whether Fox’s Football Islands A nasty game with a nice streak, or a nice game with a nasty streak.
Anyway, it doesn’t get much better than this.
